WHO were your x-great grandparents?
WHEN were they alive?
They were mainly of English, Scottish, Irish, Welsh, German and Dutch stock. The Switzers and Lawrences were Palatine Germans (1760), the Breakenridges were Scots (1727), both were filtered through Ireland. I think the Lents were descendants of Abraham Rycken(1638). Most of the early (1600s) English were Congregationalists who came to Massachusetts and Connecticut. The Carmans, Walters and Coons came from Germany to upstate New York via Philadelphia in the mid 1700s. They all stayed in New England, breeding prolifically and fighting the French and Indians, until the American Revolution of 1776, when everyone had to choose a side. Our side generally chose the Crown, and lost, and moved to what became Upper Canada, receiving farmland from the Crown in the process. Some returned to the US after the tumult and shouting had died down, some stayed. The Staples came to Canada from Ireland in 1817, apparently to avoid persecution after the Rising of 1798. The Franceys came from Ireland in 1857, probably to find a better life.
