The World Health Organization estimates that in the year 2000, approximately 1 million people will die from or attempt suicide. 1 death every 40 seconds. Suicide is now among the 3 leading causes of death among those aged 15-44 (both sexes). Suicide attempts are up to 20 times more frequent than attempted suicides. Mental disorders, particulary depression and substance abuse, are associated with more than 90% of all cases of suicide. In the US, the Centers for Disease Control reports that: -more people die from suicide than homicide -overall, suicide is the 8th leading cause of death for all Americans -males are 4 times more likely to die from suicide than females -females are more likely to attempt suicide than are males
Attempts, thoughts, or feelings of suicide is a sign a person isn't coping with an unbearable emotional pain and is a cry for help. A cry that SHOULD NOT be ignored. Suicidal people are not crazy or necessarily mentally ill, they are looking for 'relief' from their pain. They need help to chose treatment over death. As I keep telling myself...'dead people can't feel relief'. Things that can contribute to suicidal thoughts or feelings are significant changes (like in relationships or financial situations), a loss ( like a death of a loved one or loss of a job), abuse, and feeling overwhelmed from all of the above. Some signs that someone you care about could be considering suicide are: -withdrawal from friends and family -depression (negative comments about self) -sudden change from depression to calmness -talking, writing, hinting about dying -previous attempts -giving away personal possessions -settling personal affairs Some may show no signs at all, the only way to know for sure is to ask.
People who are suicidal need love, support, understanding, and help. If someone tells you that they want to die...LISTEN TO THEM...and get them some help, like a clinic or the National hotline. The National Suicidal Hotline 1-800-784-2433 (SUICIDE) If you or some one you know is feeling suicidal, please call the hotline or go to the nearest hospital.
