Sam Thompson - Probably Mid 1980s

I first met Sam back in the early 1960s in the Okeechobee Florida area. He was playing around the small honky tonks of that area. I lost contact with him when I moved to Fort Myers in about 1965. Well it wasn't long until I was to meet him again. This time at the Big Still lounge, and other bars and clubs in the Fort Myers area.

Now Sam was usually billed as a country artist. And while it's true he could sing a great country song, make no mistake about it. he could sure rock the joint when he chose to, and he often chose to do just that! He was a master of sound. Many say the music often overrode his vocals, and I suppose that's true on some of his songs. Whatever the case, Sam was a crowd pleaser. When he performed, people listened. He was funny, had a great voice, was one heck of a guitar picker and just an all around nice guy.

I don't remember the year, probably in the mid seventies, Sam moved to Texas and worked as a wildcatter. He even wrote and recorded a song about that job. Sorry to say, I don't have that recording. Maybe I will run up on a copy of it somewhere down the road.

It's been more than twenty five years since I have seen Sam. I don't know where he is or what he's doing. I was told that he had died, but I have no idea if that's true or not. Maybe someone close to Sam, or Sam himself will visit this page and fill me in. In the mean time, rare back and enjoy the sounds of this very talented writer and recording artist, we call Sam Thompson.

Here's six of Sam's songs, all written and performed by sam. Just click on title to listen in the MP3 format.

Sam was my uncle, and yes he did die in about 1998, but my dad was so happy to see that someone remembered and appreciated Uncle Sam!

Thank you so much.
