John B.
Ashcraft was a 27 year old school teacher in Union County at
the war's outbreak. He enlisted on
16 September 1861 at Union County, NC with a company mustered in
Monroe known as the "North Carolina Defenders". The men
elected Ashcraft captain. Ashcraft led his
"Defenders" to Camp Fisher in High Point, NC for training, whereby
they became Company D, 37th NC Regiment on 20 November 1861.
Ashcraft was often absent because of
illness, including a lengthy convalescence in late 1862. He
returned to duty between January and February 1863 and fought at
Chancellorsville, VA, where he received an unspecified wound on 3
May. Ashcraft resigned twelve days later.
He did not cite his wound as a
reason but stated that his health had declined "since an attack of
camp fever in July 1862, followed by chronic dysentery and a renal
affection..." He is not known to have served subsequently with
another Confederate unit.
