The original light shield bulb
Since putting up this mod site I've been getting tons of e-mail, and it has come to my attention that at least 5 people have had their ORIGINAL pelican light shield INCANDESCENT bulb burn out on them, and one person has claimed to have had 2 burn out on him.
I'm posting this to inform anyone who may decide to purchase a light shield anytime soon.
You may just want to try the mod since it seems that the bulb that they installed at the factory is reported to not be very reliable.
Note: Three of the people who have had the bulb burn out on their light shield have specifically told me that they had their dimmer switch set at the highest setting while playing Zelda or other GBC games, this tells me 2 things:
1. The user's link port was putting out 5 volts,
and
2. Pelican obviously didn't test their bulb out too well on the highest dimmer setting at the highest voltage before putting the units into production.
I just want to make SURE that no one gets confused and thinks that the LED is burning out. I did a lot of testing and experimenting with the LED that I decided to use in the walkthrough, and I would not have recommended a bulb that I believed would burn out in a short time.
Please note also that although I did test this mod rather thoroughly, I have not tested it extensively which is precisely why I have posted the disclaimer at the top of the walkthrough page.
Again, the point of this update is to stress that the Pelican light shield's ORIGINAL bulb has been reported (not proven) to have burnt out by at least 5 separate people.
Really though, what do we care, we already know that the bulb they used was inferior to the LED, and we're just replacing their bulb anyway ;)
