Important LED ratings Information

If you plan on experimenting with LEDs other than the one used in the mod, please be aware of the following important ratings that LEDs carry:
  • mcd(millicandelas): this is a brightness rating, the higher the number the brighter the LED. I've read that the human eye is really only able to distinguish between rating doubling, i.e. an 1100mcd rating might not be distinguishable from a 1500mcd rating. If you want to up the mcd rating at least double it: 1100mcd -> 2200mcd would definitely produce a noticeably brighter light.

  • mA=current: 20-30mA should be fine and is pretty much the standard with these LEDs.

  • v=voltage: again, a standard of these LEDs is about 3.6v to 4v.

  • viewing angle(in degrees): this is a very important rating. It is a rating of how the light is dispersed. The lower this number is, the more of a beam the LED will put out and the less the light will be dispersed. This is very important because the LED I originally used in the mod is rated at 100(which is very decent) but a lot of LEDs with higher mcd ratings have lower degree ratings. Used in this type of application we ideally want the highest degree rating since the bulb is so close to the GBA's screen and has very little distance to disperse the light being emitted.
