Introducing... Cyclops! | |
[walkthrough coming soon!]
At long last, a new external light modification that steals the crown from the original pelican LS modification! The pictures show a terrible glare, but take my word for it, this mod gets as close to a "backlit" look as I believe you'll ever get with an external add-on light.
I've given this mod the name "Cyclops" because of the resemblence that it bears to the one eyed titan of greek mythology. When you view it from the back that is :)
Ok, where to start? First, this mod is built on a nyko wormlight plus. The following items were used in addition to the wormlight: a BIOS battery holder from an old motherboard, the LED that I tested on the progress page, and a 2 position on/off micro switch. The "eye" is actually the micro switch :)
This page is to be considered an introduction to this new mod and is here to prove that my new mod actually exists ;)
If there is enough interest I will post a full step by step and extensive info on duplicating "Cyclops".
As a side note, let me say that I found an excellent way to disassemble the wormlight base and light dome without destroying it :) (anyone who's tried this before knows it's nearly impossible not to hack it up), But look close at my pics, I had it COMPLETELY apart and put it back together and it's still in near mint condition. I'll explain the process in the step by step if I post one eventually. Maybe I could even make an article just for disassembling the wormlight, who knows.
Ok, here you go guys, what you came here for:
An internal look at "Cyclops" 2-8-02
Well, things are looking a lot better today than yesterday, let me explain: originally I thought that this was going to be a really "hardcore" mod and might not be able to be accomplished by everyone. I was basing that thought mostly on the availability of the parts(in particular the battery holder) that I used, but guess what? Radioshack actually sells these things! So that's very good news to anyone who doesn't have an extra motherboard lying around that they can scrap for the BIOS battery holder :) Also, radioshack carries a few switches that look to be perfect candidates for the mod. I'm going to have to take a trip to the actual store though to get a part# because the pics on their site aren't very helpful and they do not give dimensions.
So it's looking like a step by step might just be on the way! In the meantime, I'm going to post a few pics that I took while Cyclops was "under the knife" :) I will also be posting more screenshots soon, most likely of the darkest game that I have; Castlevania. Hope you guys like the pictures :)
The "Castlevania" screenshots 2-9-02
As everyone knows, (even those of you who don't own it), Castlevania COTM is one of The Darkest GBA games out there. I took these shots to show how the Cyclops mod really gets the job done even under the harshest of conditions :)
I've also done something here that I've not done before: I've posted shots of the screen under 3 different conditions:
- In a pitch black room
- Under 60watt overhead incandescent lighting
- Under overhead fluorescent lighting
In each section I've provided shots of the screen under the corresponding room lighting, then a shot of how the screen looks in the same environment with the overhead lighting on and the Cyclops modded light on. See the notation on the pics for more details.
Remember that in the pictures with the overhead lights on, the accessory light is not going to be nearly as useful as when in a pitch black or very dark environment (such as in a car, etc...)
Also, I tried to hold the GBA at an angle that allowed the overhead light to light the screen without catching the reflection of the light.
