Welcome to my Pelican light shield mod page! After a lot of frustration with the Gameboy Advance's highly reflective, dim screen I decided to take it upon myself to modify an existing Light device to specs that would suit my needs. Although the White LED mod isn't perfect, it seems to be the best thing going right now. It's bright white, it floods the entire screen, and the reflection can be kept at a minimum depending on the angle of the shield, and the angle that you view it at.

A note about refelection: the GBA's screen is as reflective as a mirror, it's beyond me why nintendo didn't incorporate some sort of anti-glare coating into the screen... So, reflection on this thing is inevitable. The best way around this is try to keep the reflection off of the gaming area of the screen and focused on the top black strip of the screen. I've heard good things about a glare reducing/sun filter product sold here. I may try it out since I think it would be a great companion to the modded light shield. It's just too bad no one in the states sells these since there is the inconvenience of waiting on shipping.

Originally, I had planned on buying a glowguard and just taking the LED out of it and putting it in the Pelican LS, but I couldn't find one locally at EB, kmart, walmart, etc. so I got the idea to look in radioshack for a white LED. I was doubtful that they'd have one (since they seem to never have exactly what I'm looking for) but low and behold they had them! It's part #276-320, and is a 5mm, 3.6v 20mA 1100mcd White LED. For all intents and purposes it works fine. It was a little expensive though at $4.99 but that's hardly anything considering how wonderfully the end product works.

Now for some pictures... understand though that when using a digital camera, low light conditions and pitch black conditions usually turn out extremely bad... (i'm sure anyone who has one will attest to this). With that being said, look at each shot and read the descriptions before dismissing the results of this modification.

Also, everyone knows that when you look at the screen you have to look at it from a certain angle so imagine that coupled with trying to get a camera to take a picture at the right angle! :) -it's no fun.

The best way to determine how bright this LED mod is, is to look at the pictures and notice how bright the gameboy itself is lit up, that proves that the light will be there with this mod, you'll just have to angle the system right to use it.

Enough talk, see the pictures
