Submitted info to further help differentiate between versions 1 and 3 of the Pelican light shield.

" I just wanted to let you know that the pelican light shield I just purchased (with intent to modify, of course!) has a mystery circuit board in it. the board is marked "G4LC-001". Is this a variant on the revision 1 board? or is this a marking you have never seen before?

Pulling apart my canadian shield and applying the meter gives the following:

GBA mode: Maximum 2.79 vDC, Minimum 2.15 vDC
CGB mode: Maximum 2.99 vDC, Minimum 2.25 vDC

so ... tomorrow i go on a hunt for a light source that will work - there are a pair of big electronics surplus houses that have bins and bins and bins and bins (you get the idea) of current and discontinued components and parts. if i strike gold, i'll let you know. otherwise, i have a nice screen cover.

I am going to go out on a limb and ASSUME that pelican changed the design to prevent CGB games from kicking the big 5 volts to the bulb and causing endless burnouts, and the voltage drop across the board is just an unfortunate side effect of adding a voltage regulation system ... as opposed to doing it just so we cant modify the thing and have a killer light shield. then again, you never know."

"I emailed you about that funny dim light on the logic 3 (UK) light shield ages ago. Anyway, it appears that all light shield sold by Logic 3 in Britain (possibly europe) are of the version 3 variety.

They probably had to do it to get them CE approved. (Bloody european bureapratts).

If anyone else visits your site from the UK perhaps they could share info on which version light shield they have. "

"Hi...

Just as an FYI, I found another way folks can tell the difference between the original v1 Pelican Light Shield and the revised v3 model, no matter what the color.

Here in Los Angeles over the past few weeks, Pelican Light Shields seem to only be available within "Cool Look Survival Kit" packages that contain the Light Shield, a Wacky Pak carrying case and a Link cable.

From what I've discovered, there are two different types of "Cool Look Survival Kit" available -- the original ones that contain the v1 Light Shield, and newer one with the v3 Light Shield -- and there is an extremely easy way to visually tell the two packages apart.

The original "Cool Look Survival Kit" with the v1 Light Shield contains a Wacky Pak that is colored black & purple. Also, the Link Cable that comes in this package does not contain a raised "light" on any of the cable ends.

The revised "Cool Look Survival Kit" containing the new v3 Light Shield now contains a Wacky Pak that is entirely black. Additionally, if you look at the link cable in this package, you'll see that one of the cable ends contains a raised "light" to show that the cable is connected properly and receiving power.

Just as an FYI, the product code and UPC numbers are identical between all versions of this product.

So there you have it -- an easy well to find an original v1 Light Shield no matter what the color is.

On a side note, Target currently has these on sale for a scant $9.99 through January 5th... and the two Target's I went to had a mix of both old and new packages (so make sure you know which package you are getting).

Hope this helps! "
