On August 27, at approximately 2:00 p.m., I
set foot on Japanese soil for the first time in my life! The city was
Fukuoka, which is the largest city on Kyushu, the southernmost island of
mainland Japan. It's
interesting to note that Fukuoka is actually closer to Seoul and Busan
than it is to Tokyo.
Because none of the guided excursions were
all being conducted in English, I opted to hop into a taxi and enjoy a
self-guided tour of Canal
City. This futuristic, three-dimensional
city-within-a-city is a bold new design, the first of its kind in Japan.
The facility hosts a variety of attractions, including numerous fountains
and mini-geysers that shoot water high into the air; some major department
stores; more than 170 specialty stores and restaurants; the Canal City
Gallery; one of the largest cinema complexes in Japan (with 13
screens); the famous Grand Hyatt Fukuoka Hotel; the Fukuoka City
Theater; and Fukuoka Joypolis, a futuristic indoor amusement park,
operated by Sega, that offers the latest computer attractions and games.

Vehicles in Japan travel in the
