The Yamato along with her sistership Musashi were the largest and most powerful battleships ever completed. Only the Mitsubishi Shipyard in Nagasaki, had a slipway large enough, and this had to be reinforced. During construction the slipways were shielded behind massive curtains, in order to deceive US intelligence. The main armament was 9x18in guns on 3 triple turrets. Because Yamato could not keep up with the latest fleet carriers, the Imperial Navy was reluctant to use her as carrier escort. In April 1945 Yamato was sent on a suicide mission, where it received between 11 and 15 torpedoes along with 7 bombs before sinking.
