The Frantic Manatees is a triathlon club based in
Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
Philosophy
The most important component of our training is FUN!
If the process of training is fun then it's a whole lot
easier to make it out for each session. If we make it
out for each session we, in turn, collect all of the
physical benefits as well. That said, our sessions are
all grounded on the fundamentals of tri training:
periodization, specificity and progressive overload to name
a few.
History
The Frantic Manatees track their history back to 1871 when
Sir Markilin Daviscott made his famous journey across Canada
- swimming from Newfoundland to Ontario, biking to the
Rockies (spot of the famous "Last Bike"), and finishing with
a brave crossing of the mountains into Vancouver. The
name "Frantic Manatees" traces back to the swimming portion
of his journey when local fishermen were struck by
Daviscott's almost total lack of forward thrust despite his
ample dramatic aquatic flailing. The modern history of
the club dates back to last November.
Coaches
Geordie McConnell is a qualified Indoor Cycling Instructor
and Personal Fitness Trainer with 20 years' experience in
triathlon. Geordie leads all biking and running
aspects of training.
Alejandro Morilla is a qualified lifeguard and swimming
instructor who has taught aquatics for over 10 years in
Canada, the United States, and his native Venezuela.
Alejandro leads our swim training at the Plant Recreation
Centre. Our Members
Ranging from those that have never participated in a
triathlon to Ironman finishers, our group covers a wide range of
abilities. To say that we are 'age groupers' is a misnomer as
that infers that we watch carefully where we finish in relation to
others. Our
main competitor is ourselves. And for some it's not about
competing at all, but simply completing.
