"The police have an army of trained men following the conventional paths - following leads, cracking alibis. If this case can be solved this way, they will solve it. I have no army - I have to take a different approach."Loves fine food and orchids - generally in that order. He will not leave his house to investigate a case (this comes up almost every book), but will if he has to hide, or for very rare travel - about every five stories. Prone to lethargy - but Goodwin's needling keeps that away very effectively, so no points. Without Goodwin, wouldn't be very useful as a detective. Carla Lovchen, the estranged adopted daughter, only showed up in two stories, dying in "The Black Mountain." She was a Montegrin patriot, fighting for freedon from Yugoslavia. Arnold Zeck was an enemy crimelord who showed up in three stories, dying in "In the Best Families."
The watched by the police tends to turn into a hunted fairly often. As a licensed P.I., Wolfe has the obligation to report all crimes and evidence to the police. Often this is inconvenient, especially when the suspects are clients - then the P.I.'s have to solve the case quickly and dramatically, to avoid losing their licences, or even being arrested.
