UNDER GRADUATE & GRADUATE EDUCATION

The Under Graduate & Graduate programs are designed to provide

A Background of fundamentals in science.

Courses in Geophysics to coordinate these fundamentals with principles of Geophysics.

The program leading to the Bachelor of Science (Sarjana Sains, S.Si) in Geophysics permits many electives & a high degree of flexibility for each individual student. Graduate programs give specialized training for professional work in exploration, research, & education, & lead to degrees of Master of Science & Doctor.

UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS

The Geophysics program which lead to a Sarjana Sains (S.Si) at Gadjah Mada was one of the first established in this country. The major is designed to cover a broad field in the physical sciences, with the earth as its focus. It consists essentially of courses in math, physics, geology, and geophysics. Both laboratory and field work are involved. The small size of geophysics classes allows for close interaction between students and faculty as well as providing an opportunity for students to become familiar with the research facilities and research projects within sub department. In order to pursue sarjana degree S1 in Geophysics with a title 'Sarjana Sains' (S.Si), students should complete and pass the examination in courses, practical works, and thesis work, which are totally minimum of 144 semester credits units (satuan kredit semester), i.e.:

19 units in General Courses (Mata Kuliah Umum, MKU)

65 units in professional Basic Courses (Mata Kuliah dasar Keahlian, MKDK)

49 units in Professional Courses (Mata Kuliah Keahlian) including 6 units of thesis work

11 units in Election Courses (Mata Kuliah Pilihan, MKP)

GRADUATE PROGRAMS

The Sub Department offers M.Si and Dr. (Doctoral) degrees in geophysics. The central objective of the graduate program is to encourage creative thinking and develop the capacity for independent and original research. A strong undergraduate background in the sciences is especially helpful, and a significant number of our graduate students have their training in physics, mathematics etc. Graduate students are formally accepted into the geophysics program, and they normally work directly toward a Dr or Ph.D. A master's degree is not prerequisite for a Dr or Ph.D.

MASTER'S DEGREE. The Master of Science degree is granted upon completion of 20 semester units of upperdivision and graduate courses (at least 8 units must be graduate, non research units), and submission of Master's thesis, followed by a comprehensive oral examination. The Master's thesis should be completed within four semesters (2 years).

DR or Ph.D DEGREE. Candidates for the Ph.D degree must pass the oral qualifying examination by the end second year, typically the third semester and complete a thesis to the satisfaction of the appointed thesis committee. Students must have one research propostion to present at the qualifying examination in geophysics, each developed under the supervision of different professor on substantially different topics, in geophysics.

LIBRARIES

Geophysics Sub Department has a library specialized for geophysical books. This library can be considered to be a good geophysics library in Indonesia. Besides the Geophysics Library, students may also use the faculty library and the university library.

Excuse us, because until now library cannot serve you online!!!!

UNIVERSITY LINK

Just after the birth of the department in 1955, linkages with foreign universities such as Italian, British, American, Russian, Checkoslovakian, Egyptian, Netherlands have been established in order to start and maintain international standard lectures and research in Physics. Excellent Professors, like Dr. Olga Pierucci, Dr. J. Aharoni, Dr. Adolphson, Dr. B. Krachic, Dr. F. El Bedewi, had given their lectures to the earlier student badges.

In growing process up to the present time, international linkages with the Netherlands through NUFFIC Projects (Free Univ. of Amsterdam, Rijk Univ. of Utrecht, Univ. Wageningten, and Univ. of Nijmegen), the USA (University of California in Los Angeles, UCLA, and University of California in Santa Barbara, UCSB), Germany (DAAD, KFA Juelich, DLR Bonn, GFZ Potsdam, Universities of Stuttgart, Clausthaal Zelerfeld, Darmstadt, etc.), Malaysia (UKM,UTM, AND UM), Australia (Sidney and Monash Universities) have been well managed in order to develop human resources and partnership in various scientific research projects.

Beside the international linkages, national linkages in this country with government and private universities (UI,ITB, ITS, UMY,UMM,ETC) and institutions (LIPI, BATAN, BAPPENAS-DRN, Dit. Volcanology, PERTAMINA, with its oil and service companies, etc.) have been growing up steadily, especially after the government launched the RUT (Integrated Strategic Research).
