My life as a Trekkie

All my life I have grown up around Star Trek. I watched the original series reruns and the animated series as a kid. My parents would take me along to conventions to meet Star Trek actors, and get books signed. I would buy toys and books with my saved allowance, or get them as gifts.

While other kids read Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn, I read Star Trek books. I still have my first Which Way (Choose Your Own Adventure) Book, I read that thing over and over, and went through every single possible adventure the original series cast could go through. I also have the first real Star Trek book that I received as a present around my tenth birthday from Jan, a family friend who led a book discussion group that I participated in. It is a hardbound edition of the Vulcan Academy Murders. That book sparked my interest in Star Trek books, and led to a long line of original series books.

Most of the book I read centered on Spock, who was my first Star Trek crush. I was fascinated (pardon the pun) with his conflicted character, being caught between two worlds, emotional and logic, human and Vulcan. I also enjoyed books focusing on characters that had little screen time, like Uhura, Sulu, Chekov, Scotty, and Saavik. Though, the main reasons I read and watched Star Trek was science, adventure, and the vision of a positive future for mankind.

As the years went by, I gradually progressed to TNG and DS9 books. I watched those shows avidly, loved the characters, and enjoyed following their adventures. When Voyager came around, I was involved in Deep Space Nine, and barely gave Voyager notice. Years later, I rediscovered Voyager on the nightly reruns on a local channel, and on the Internet through fan fiction. I caught up with what I missed in time to watch seventh season episodes on UPN.

Over the years, I have also enjoyed other sci-fi, fantasy, and horror shows. I watch(ed) Forever Knight, Babylon 5, and Highlander mainly. My first introduction to Internet fan fiction was after Forever Knight ended. I found a virtual season of it on the web. I was new to the 'net then, and didn't enjoy it as much as I do now. So, it took me almost four years to find myself stumbling into the world of Star Trek fan fiction. At first, I was into Jadzia/Julian (DS9) fan fiction. I had fun reading those for a while. Then, somehow in my searches of the 'net, I stumbled across koffeeklub.net. I liked the Janeway/Chakotay relationship, and was so disappointed by the C/7 (shudder) ending to the show. I started reading the J/C fan fiction at the Koffee Klub and was hooked.

I don't read J/C exclusively. I read Deep Space Nine stories (Dr. Bashir and Jadzia/Julian), Voyager crew adventures, Chakotay stories, Janeway stories, Chakotay/Torres friendship and/or romance stories, Enterprise crew adventures, Archer/T'Pol friendship and romance, Hoshi Sato stories, Trip/Hoshi friendship and romance, and Reed/Sato friendship and romance. I know that not all of my shippages will be a reality, but that's why there is fan fiction and alternate universes.

The men of Star Trek...I already said my first ST crush was Spock. Well, he was the first of many. I fell for Data (He was so intelligent and innocent in a way), Dr. Bashir (the accent, dark, handsome), Chakotay *my all time favorite* (sensitive, dimples, tall, dark, handsome, eyes, and that sexy voice!), Harry Kim (cute face, nice body, and a sweet guy), Tom Paris (at first, I didn't go for him, but his boyish charm, attitude, and his looks got me.), *honorable mention* Lt. Ayala (didn't see him much, but he has won a place in my fantasy book), and most recently the Enterprise three, Archer, Trip, and Malcolm. All three of them have heavenly bodies. :) Archer is my favorite, right now. There's the captain side of him, then the sensitive, caring off-duty side I like.

Currently, I'm watching Enterprise. The 3rd season has had some really good episodes. I like the action, and plotlines, but would like to see more character development. When I think about it, I barely know anything about the characters, and would like to see more episodes with details about them. I would also like to see more interaction between crewmates on a friendship level. Specifically, I'd like to see more of the Archer/T'Pol, Archer/Trip, and Malcolm/Trip friendships. Morality plays are another aspect of Trek I like. I'd be happy to see more of those stories on Enterprise.
