In 1998 I embarked upon a musical journey with no defined destination.
Boarding the craft with much trepidation – for I had sailed these waters before – I charted a course due north, guided by the Inner Light of inspiration and fueled by a passion for progressive music.
After a self-imposed exile lasting well over twenty years, the dormant ember of creativity rekindled. The desire to express myself through music rejuvenated my Spirit.
But this time I would sail the waters solo, avoiding the perils and pratfall that laid waste to my last vessel.
I piloted this new vehicle ‘Ghosts Of Pompeii’, with the wind at my back and an uncompromising spirit of adventure and exploration. Lured on by the Sirens call.
My genre of choice was instrumental progressive rock, and these were turbulent waters indeed! The Sea of Apathy, which battered my last endeavor, was teeming with hostile life forms, and prog/rockers have always been easy prey.
These could be troubled waters indeed.
But the exhilaration of the journey outweighed the potential for success or failure.
“Our Past Is Cast In Stone” is the debut album from Ghosts Of Pompeii, laying the groundwork for what was to come. The album is a merging of prog/rock, new age ambience, jazz, free-form avant-garde experimentation, and the release of twenty years of pent-up nervous energy.
From the explosive introduction of “The Land Time Forgot” to the manic ticking timepiece of “Sniper In The Clocktower” the music paints an aural soundscape drawing the listener into each strange twisted tale.
Each song is presented as an unrealized movie. But with no words to impede the storylines the plots are infinite, as the listener becomes an interactive participant, creating the visuals and directing the action.
“The Voyage Of The Gold Dabloon” is an epic five-part swashbuckling tale of pirates doomed to the still waters of the Doldrums. “From Out Of The Cylinder” is a musical tribute, referring to the Martian craft of H.G. Wells’s classic novel “War Of The Worlds”. “Midnight Carrousel” is the tale of a nightmarish carnival ride conceived in Hell. And even innocuous garden decorations turn deadly in the ELP inspired “Invasion Of The Garden Gnomes”. Awaken The Ghosts - 1999

The follow-up CD, “Awaken The Ghosts” retains the prog/rock sensibilities established on the debut album, yet is a more experimental endeavor, incorporating elements of aggressive electronics into the ever-expanding repertoire; evident on tracks like “The Liberation of Area 51” and “Whispers On The Solar Winds”. The album also contains arguable two of the best progressive numbers from Ghosts, “Escape From The Ant Farm” and “Saint George And The Dragon”.
