Nightmare Theatre Closing Sequence, Early to Mid '60's (as remembered by Joe Busam and Rich Rogers)
Joe's Memory (sent in 1997):
(The rarest sequence--I only saw it once at the close
of a show--) featured a door being opened from the far side of a completely
darkened room. The shadow of a man entering with a flashlight. As the
flashlight slowly scans the room, the light suddenly lands on the body
of a woman lying on the floor. Cut to closeup of the body as the word
"Nightmare" appears over the scene.
Rich's Memory (sent in October, 1999):
The screen was completely dark and then a door was opened by a man dressed
in dark apparel or so it seemed because this was done in black and white.
I saw this ending a number of times and had the impression the man
appeared to be a thief due to his attire. It seemed he wore a dark, long
sleeved turtleneck sweater and gloves. You see him enter by stealth, and
scan the room with his flashlight. Next, he discovers a female body laying
on the floor. As the camera moves closer, the intruder kneels down beside
the body, he then shines the beam on the back of the head and swiftly turns
it over. Just then the camera pans in for a very close head shot. What is
revealed is a flat face with no features whatsoever! No eyes, mouth or
nose!!! At the exact same moment, a very loud scream is blasted forth and the
word "Nightmare" appears over the screen.
I must say at the age of 8, this scared me half to death! But I loved it! In
these early days they really did some spooky stuff and this was the topper!
