Books by Jessica Zafra

Manananggal Terrorizes Manila and Other Short Stories
In the November 11, 1992 issue of Woman Today magazine, Zafra's article (Advertisements for Myself) discusses why you should buy this book. We will list them down here:

(1)Intriguing Cover Art. The picture on the cover art resembles a Rorschach inkblot test--you know, one of those blotches psychologists make you interpret to determine your state of mind. Ostensibly, the drawing is that of two bats and one eye, but if you look closely, you may find all sorts of interesting images. I am hoping that the cover design will have a subliminal effect on unsuspecting potential readers, and that when they see it they will say, "I have a bizarre urge to buy this book, I just don't know why."

(2)It makes a cheap Christmas present. At P130, it costs much, much less than a Tag Heuer watch or a Louis Vuitton luggage. In fact, in fact, it is much cheaper than any Christmas gift item. And it makes an effective sincerity detector. If the friend you give this book to appears diappointed, then she or he is more interested in your money than in you yourself. Ditch with all possible haste.

(3)Sting "songhits". If you have trouble remembering the lyrics to theat Police song "Wrapped Around Your Finger," your worries are over! Lyrics to the said song are contained in one of the short stories in the book. You need never pause in the middle of an intense rendition of the song again! Just take the book with you wherever you go, and you can sing "Wrapped..." until your officemates lose their minds.

(4)Easy to discuss in book reports. Say you have to write a paper for English class, the deadline is looming, and you have no idea what you're going to write about. Solved!

(5)Interesting conversational piece. You will be pleasantly surprised at the number of people, some of them attractive dudes, who will do a double take when they see you carrying such wierd-looking book. After all, "what is that?" is a tried and tested opening line.

(6)In case it's made into a movie, you can say you've read the book. I don't see Robin Padilla playing any of my characters, but hey, if I can have a book published, anything is possible.

(7)Easy to color-coordinate with your wardrobe. The cover is deep black with an orange design, so it goes well with practically anything. Whether your dressing philosophy runs to haute couture or comfort, this book, being basic black, will not clash with any of your clothes. Plus, if you spot someone you don't want to talk to, you can pretend you're reading, or cover your face with the book.

(8)If you don't buy it, my publisher will kill me. Enough said.

Womenagerie and Other Tales from the FrontWomenagerie and Other Tales from the Front is a collection of her earlier columns in Woman Today magazine. The articles here were published in 1991 and 1992. It discusses range from how to become a June bride, to foreign languages, and to marketing.

TwistedThree times a week, Jessica Zafra skewers the world at large in her column Twistedin the daily broadsheet TODAY. In this collection of Twisted pieces, she reports on the horros of urban living, recounts the torments of mountain-climbing, alternately vilifies and rhapsodizes on the male of the species, contemplates life in a parallel universe, and awaits the end of the world. Articles included were printed in 1994.

Twisted II: The Spawn of the TwistedObviously this is the sequel to the first Twisted book. These are the 1995 and 1996 articles. Although the First Twisted book is a little more thick, Twisted II has better design, inside-out. But of course, it still contains the wit and charm of Jessica Zafra.

Fruitcake Edited by Jessica, this is basically a storybook based on the album of the Eraserheads from the same title. It's about a little girl named Frannie Wei who ran away from their home on the eve of (or is it a few days before) Christmas, and her adventures with the Carol Kings. It's nice to read the book while playing the Fruitcake CD since this is a storybook-cum-songhits type. The graphics is super great!

Planet of the TwistedOf course you know this means that this is the sequel to the sequel of the Twisted book, which contains article from 1996 and 1997. I have actually bought myself a copy of this book, but my ex-bf borrowed it from me , and lost it (could you believe that he's accusing me of hiding it from him! Damn!)

Last December, JZ released her latest book, Twisted 4: The Twisted Menace which contains her Twisted articles from 1997 to 1998, I guess. Well, I can't seem to find a copy of this book to buy, so don't ask me about it yet. When I get hold of one, I'll post some stuff about it here.

And one more thing, she also wrote the Chicken Pox for the Soul in 1997. It was a spinoff of the neverending series of Chicken Soup books. Very funny, but most of what she said there are actually true! A must buy for JZ collectors and fans.
