Photograph Information:
The dark nebula at the lower left of the above photograph is known as the Pipe Nebula. It is a naked eye dark nebula two degrees southeast of theta Ophiuchi, in very rich area of the Milky Way. The dark clouds, shaped like smoke rising from a pipe, are caused by absorption of background starlight by dust. These dust clouds can be traced all the way to the Rho Ophiuchi nebular clouds on the lower right. The brightest star in the field is Antares in the lower right of the photo . Antares is a red super giant star that it is steadily shedding material from its distended surface as it nears the end of its life. These solid particles reflect Antares' light and hide it in a nebula of its own making. The dusty region between Ophiuchus and Scorpius contains some of the most colorful and spectacular nebulae ever photographed. Many types of nebula are highlighted here red emission nebula, blue reflection nebula, and dark absorption nebula. The dark area in the middle of photograph remind me from the first time I saw it, the shape of a horse and you can see it in the animation and how this imagination is enhanced.
