Object Information: NGC 7331 is the brightest galaxy in Pegasus. This spiral galaxy was one of William Herschel's earliest discoveries over 200 years ago and is one of the brighter galaxies which was missed in Messier's catalog. A nearby galaxy cluster, Stephan's Quintet is located about 1.5 degrees to the southwest. The galaxy itself is accompanied by smaller, fainter neighbors. It exposes a fine spiral structure despite its small inclination from the edge-on position. In many respects this galaxy resembles the famous, much-elongated, Andromeda Galaxy M-31. |
