Photograph Information:

The brightest star in the field is Antares in the lower left of the photo . Antares is a red super giant star that it is steadily shedding material from its distended surface as it nears the end of its life. These solid particles reflect Antares' light and hide it in a nebula of its own making. The dusty region between Ophiuchus and Scorpius contains some of the most colorful and spectacular nebulae ever photographed. Many types of nebula are highlighted here  red emission nebula, blue reflection nebula, and dark absorption nebula.
