M45, The Pleiades is an open cluster containing over 3000 stars located in the constellation Taurus is about 400 light years away and only 13 light years across is one of the brightest and closest cluster to us. You can see in the above photograph the blue reflection nebulae that surround the bright cluster stars. The brightest seven go under the name "The Seven Sisters" (from brighter to dimmer): Alcyone (eta Tauri), Electra, Maia, Merope, Taygeta, Celaeno, and Asterope. Added to the list are also Pleione (BU Tauri = 28 Tauri), just east of Alcyone, and Atlas 27 Tauri) who are actually Mum and Dad for the seven sisters. Easily visible to the naked eye , you can see about 6-7 , it is also a beautiful sight in binoculars. It is the most famous star cluster on the sky. |
