Photograph Information: NGC2237 is a large diffuse nebula called ("Rosette Nebula") inside to nebula and in the middle hole is the open star cluster NGC 2244. Visually, this object is an open cluster with some vague grayish areas. Photographs show a stunning red ring of nebulosity extending over 2° of sky. The nebulosity is best viewed with a 50-80mm finder equipped with an OIII filter. It takes a large telescope to distinguish the ring shape. The open cluster at the center of the Rosette Nebula, may actually be stars formed out of the Rosette Nebula. However, the central star, 12 Mon (magnitude 6), probably does not belong to the group. The Rosette Nebula is located to constellation Monoceros and its distant estimated 3000 light-years away. The great abundance of hydrogen gas gives to the nebula its red color in photographs. The wind from the open cluster of stars has cleared a hole in the nebula's center. |
