Our Camporee at Girl Scout Camp Sycamore has finally arrived. We didn't get to go to Camporee last year because the Girl Scout Camp was badly damaged by tornadoes. We did have a one day makeup at the Edwin Warner Lodge last Sept. but it just wasn't the same.

Friday, May 12th finally arrived and we all met at the church where we have our meetings. Everyone helped to load the vans and cars with our gear and clothes. We had 13 girls and lots and lots of gear to cram into the van and three cars. We finally got it all stuffed in and loaded up. We were ready to go!

The first stop we made was Taco Bell to have dinner before we went on to Camp Sycamore.

After we ate we rode up to Ashland City. We drove up to our Lodge and Tents and began to unload our gear. Our tents were heavy canvas, on wooden platforms. We had cots inside to sleep on. There was no electricity or any kind of luxury.

While we were setting up our tents, we noticed that some of the tents had large red wasps nests in them. Ms. Sandy called the Maintenance office and they sent a man to take care of the wasps. He showed up as we were hiking down the hill to go to the Flag Retirement Ceremony. We learned the correct way to retire a United States Flag.

After the ceremony, we hiked back up the hill to our Lodge. The Lodge is a big cabin, with electricity, heat and air conditioning, tables, a fireplace and another outside to cook with. We had a snack and then we made our Mother's Day craft project. It was a bunny wind chime, made from little flower pots. We all decorated our bunnies differently.

When we finished our crafts, it was kind of late so we brushed our teeth and got ready for bed. Luckily, there was a long sink with running water attached to the back wall of the latrine. Inside the latrine were toiled seats but they just covered big holes in the ground. We got used to using the latrine by the time the weekend was over.

About 3 in the morning a big storm blew in and we all had to run for the lodge. The wind was blowing very strong and there was lots of thunder and lightening. It had been pretty hot before the storm, but now the temperature was cooler. It was easier to sleep in the lodge, even if we did all have to sleep on the floor in our sleeping bags.
