Overview

Liz recently returned to the Pacific Northwest after over 5 years working for the Coastal and Marine Resources Centre (CMRC) at University College Cork in Ireland. She co-designed, co-developed and later managed the Marine Irish Digital Atlas (http://mida.ucc.ie), which contributed significantly to her skills in web design; web GIS; database management systems; metadata and technology standards; and geospatial data creation and collection. Liz’s other GIS projects include mapping Orange Roughy habitat in Irish waters and compiling data for a web GIS as part of the HERMES (Hotspot Ecosystem Research on the Margins of European Seas) project. She has coordinated international workshops and conferences (including a Trans-Atlantic workshop on Potentials and Limitations of Coastal Web Atlases), regularly guest lectured on Web GIS for postgraduate courses and has extensive experience in layout design of newsletter publications (CMRC and IRLOGI).

Before working in Ireland, Liz obtained a Masters in Geography from Oregon State University, where she gained experience in teaching and performing GIS research. While there she used ArcIMS to develop the web GIS for the Virtual Research Vessel, which brought together scientific data from a segment of the East Pacific Rise sea floor spreading ridge. Her thesis involved working with secondary science teachers to develop the Tahoma Virtual Atlas, a community atlas which enabled teachers to easily integrate GIS into their science courses.

Liz served with AmeriCorps for two years in Portland at the Northwest Service Academy immediately after university. This led to a two year position as a cartographic technician for Mt. Hood National Forest, where she developed her core GIS skills and experience in using GIS for the management of the natural environment. Her positive experience in this position led her to pursue a Masters in Geography.
