In 1982 (or thereabouts) Glam appeared to choke and die. Throughout the cold war years, there were unsubstantiated and unholy claims to the title, and a lot of quite-good music, but no true Glam.

Well apparently all we needed was a little time to digest and desconstruct the idiom, because in 1993 (or thereabouts) Glam got an adreneline shot to the heart and started right up. Suddenly brash young whips were no longer biting face badly, but making it over again into it's own new and shining example.

Who knows if these arteests call themselves Glam. Who cares? Even if they don't all adhere to all the criteria, We say they have the proper modus operandi to be the next wave of idols. not leeching off the Motherage Mavens, they've somehow found their own territory, and are once again changing the landscape for the better.

These are the Keepers of the Flame. The Pop Tarts with Real Filling. The Abstract and Brief Chronicles of the Time. The Future of Glam. With them, the world won't be the same again.

((oh, yes, and parvenu is just another word for upstart.))

* * Placebo
"Neo glam-rockers Placebo have not only managed to impress legions of followers in their native U.K. (where their 1996 debut went gold), they've also earned the admiration of pop power hitters like Michael Stipe, Bono, David Bowie and Marilyn Manson, who they count among their friends. Gender-bending frontman Brian Molko (the son of Scottish and American parents) first crossed paths with Swedish-born bassist Stefan Olsdal while attending school in Luxembourg. ... Their 1996 eponymous debut, which Molko describes as a "very sexual" album... spawned the No. 4 hit "Nancy Boy." The flamboyant trio spent much of 1996 and '97 on the road, which included playing select dates on U2's Popmart tour and making an appearance at David Bowie's 50th birthday bash at Madison Square Garden. Their second CD, and major label debut for Virgin Records, Without You I'm Nothing, was released in November 1998 in the United States. Molko and his bandmates can also be seen playing glam-rockers in the film Velvet Goldmine, produced by Michael Stipe."- Rolling Stone

* * Pulp

"...The British rock band Pulp grew from an underground '80s band to one of the most popular Brit-pop acts of the '90s, evolving constantly through changes in membership, record label, style and sound. From simple acoustic ballads to Bowie-influenced glam dance-rock, Pulp, led by charismatic frontman Jarvis Cocker, has been a staple of the U.K. music scene for more than 20 years, one of the most enduring acts in modern English music. ...Pulp was first formed in Sheffield, England in 1978 by vocalist/guitarist/songwriter Cocker -- then only 15 years old -- and three friends as Arabacus Pulp, named for an example commodity in one of Cocker's economics textbooks. ?Moving to Island Records, Pulp finally burst into the British mainstream in 1994 with His 'N' Hers, a disco-rock album that reached No. 9 in the U.K. After a world tour with Blur, Pulp returned to the studio to record 1995's Different Class, their smash breakthrough album. That same summer Pulp became the last-minute headliner at the Glastonbury Festival. Now superstars in their homeland (and the object of a devoted U.S. cult following), Pulp, and specifically frontman Jarvis Cocker, began to appear in U.K. tabloids regularly. In January 1996 Cocker stormed the stage when Michael Jackson appeared at the Brit Awards, prompting weeks of media attention. ....The band record[ed] This is Hardcore...in March 1998 -Rolling Stone"

* * London Suede

On London Suede: "This hugely promoted UK band broke through in 1993 by merging the lyrical perspective of Morrissey with the posturings of David Bowie and the glam set. Lead singer Brett Anderson quickly established a rare gift for brilliantly evocative mood swings and monochrome dioramas. Just as much was made of guitarist Bernard Butler and his similarity to indie guitar hero Johnny Marr. ... Anderson's arrogant wit and seedy, sexually ambivalent narratives fascinated the press at a time when the music scene was dominated by American grunge and the UK's 'Madchester' bands... Their first release, 'The Drowners', arrived in March 1992, and 'My Insatiable One', on the b-side, was a brooding low-life London tale of 'shitting paracetamol on the escalator', which so impressed Morrissey he would later cover it live. By this time, the mainstream music media, starved of an adequate figurehead for the 90s, had latched onto the band in a quite disconcerting manner. ..Their appearance at February 1993's televised BRIT Awards gave them massive exposure, and their third single, 'Animal Nitrate', broke into the UK Top 10. On the back of this high profile their debut album went straight to number 1 in the UK charts, going gold on the second day of release. Again, much of the lyrical imagery was deliberately homoerotic, reflected in the sleeve artwork. ... The band proceeded to go from strength to strength, winning the Mercury Music Prize in September. All seemed rosy in the garden until the eve of their second album in 1994, when it was announced that Butler had left ....Great pressure was on the band for their third album, a lengthy gap between releases and the fickle music public being major factors. Any fears were dispelled by Coming Up, as it was a stunning collection of crafted, concise songs.... The following year's Sci-Fi Lullabies collected together their consistently excellent b-sides. In 1999, the band premiered their new album with April's UK number 5 single 'Electricity'. The following month Head Music entered the UK album chart at number 1.... - Sonic Net"

* *Manic Street Preachers

On V.U.:
"...The British political glam-rock quartet Manic Street Preachers was formed in Blackwood, Wales by James Dean Bradfield (vocals, guitar), Richey James (rhythm guitar), Nicky Wire (bass) and Sean Moore (drums). The Manics landed their first record deal in 1990, signing to the indie label Damaged Goods. After releasing several raw-sounding EPs the band became a favorite of the British music press, who faithfully covered the Manics determined slogans ("every band should break up after one album"), outrageous comments ("we hate Slowdive more than Hitler"), and shocking stunts (Richey James carved the words "4 Real" into his arm during an interview). The group's major-label debut, 1992's Generation Terrorists, spawned several U.K. Top 40 hits, as did 1993's Gold Against the Soul. But following the 1994 release of Holy Bible, James, who was reportedly suffering from various personal problems, mysteriously disappeared. He is assumed to be dead, although the case is still unsolved by the British police. In spite of this tragedy, the Manics continued on as a trio, releasing 1996's Everything Must Go, a huge commercial and critical success in the U.K. that garnered three Brit Awards: Best Live Act, Best Single ("A Design for Life") and Best Album. The Manics' latest CD, This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours, was released in the U.S. in the spring of 1999. ....- Rolling Stone"

* *Hole

"... US hardcore guitar band fronted by the effervescent Courtney Love. She formed Hole with Caroline Rue, Jill Emery and Eric Erlandson, following encouragement from Sonic Youth 's Kim Gordon. The band quickly produced a trio of fine singles; 'Retard Girl', 'Dicknail', and 'Teenage Whore', which were pointed and unsettling dirges, set in a grimly sexual lyrical environment. Favourable UK press coverage, in particular from the Melody Maker 's Everett True, helped make Hole one of the most promising new groups of 1991. Equally impressive was a debut album, produced by Don Fleming and Kim Gordon, followed by massive exposure supporting Mudhoney throughout Europe. ...In March 1992 Love married Nirvana singer/guitarist Kurt Cobain. That same month bass player Emery departed from the group line-up, with Rue following shortly afterwards. ...Love's domestic travails continued to dominate coverage of her musical project, with Cobain's death on the eve of the release of Live Through This practically obliterating that album's impact. This served to do the much-maligned Love a genuine disservice, as the album contained another startling collection of songs, written with intellect as well as invective. ...Replacements for Emery and Rue had been found in Kristen Pfaff and Patty Schemel , though tragedy again followed Love when Pfaff was found dead from a heroin overdose in her bathtub shortly after the album's release, and just two months after Cobain's death. She was replaced by Melissa Auf der Maur .... These dates again saw Love dominate headlines with violent and/or inflammatory stage behaviour. My Body The Hand Grenade was a compilation of rare and unreleased material from the group's early days, compiled by Erlandson that served as a stopgap for the eagerly awaited Celebrity Skin. Lacking the raw abrasiveness of Live Through This, the album was ultimately a disappointingly mainstream work. Auf der Maur left the band the following year to join the Smashing Pumpkins. ....- Rolling Stone"

**Dandy Warhols

"...This Portland, Oregon, USA quartet emerged when Peter Holmstrom pressured friend Courtney Taylor into forming a band in mid-1993. The duo enlisted the aid of the equally inexperienced Eric HedfordFourth member Zia McCabe was asked to round out the line-up despite having never played an instrument before. Originally calling themselves Andy Warhol's Wet Dream, the band changed its name to the Dandy Warhols and soon made a name for itself on the Portland club scene. Tapping into the trippier side of psychedelic rock, the band's shows travelled the same astral plane as early Pink Floyd, Syd Barrett and Hawkwind. In 1995, the Dandy Warhols recorded Dandys Rule OK for Portland label Tim Kerr. Their moody debut was coached in lots of atmospherics and featured tributes to Lou Reed and Andy Warhol's quip on fame via an extended 16-minute. The band's live shows and impressive debut soon started a major-label bidding war which the cheeky quartet took advantage of by going out to dinner with as many A reps as possible. After signing with Capitol Records, the band released ... The Dandy Warhols Come Down. The album showed them delving into 'shoegazing' space-rock reminiscent of Spiritualized and My Bloody Valentine, ... and showing a knack for straightforward garage rock ('Cool As Kim Deal'). The biggest attention grabber was 'Not If You Were The Last Junkie On Earth', a song that ostensibly criticized heroin use but instead passed it off as being merely passé. A video was later made by famed photographer David LaChappelle. After touring as an opening act for Teenage Fanclub and Radiohead, the Dandy Warhols returned to the studio in early 1999. Brent De Boer replaced Hedford on the band's third album, the wonderfully-titled Thirteen Tales From Urban Bohemia. ....- Rolling Stone"
