Final Score Glasgow Tigers 12 Merseyside Nighthawks 16 TIGERS LOSE A CLOSE FIGHT With many new faces in their squad and 22 additions from last year the Glasgow Tigers started brightly amid the rain and hail and within 3 plays had scored against the Nighthawks with a 45 yard run from midfield by running back Ian “Sparky” Dick. The Merseyside defence stopped the two point conversion and it was 6 – 0 to the Tigers. The Nighthawks offence was held at bay by the Tigers defensive unit and as the game progressed it was mainly the Tigers who had the upper hand, but they were twice held by the Nighthawks defence within their own 20 yard line. With no further scoring in the first half the Tigers seemed in control of the game, but with only a slender 6 – 0 lead. The second half saw the Liverpool team come out on fire and with the help of power rushers Damian Routledge and Barry Murphy they had scored a touchdown run from 2 yards out and then a successful 2 point pass conversion by quarterback Parr for an 8 – 6 lead. The Tigers came storming back with a long drive capped by Graeme Clee’s 20 yard rush into the endzone for the lead. Again the Tigers failed in converting the extra points, but now held a 12 – 8 lead. This did not last long as the Merseyside quarterback Tim Parr fired a 40 yard pass to his receiver for the go ahead score. The Nighthawks Murphy added the 2 point run conversion and now had a 16 -12 lead. The Tigers Offence were unable to break through a tough Nighthawks Defence and although running back Dick thought he had given Glasgow the lead with a short run from the 2 yard line however a series of costly penalties put the Tigers back to the 12 yard line, where they eventually turned the ball over on downs. The fourth quarter was again dominated by each Defensive unit, with neither side doing enough to break through for another score and so it was the Nighthawks conversions that won them the game. Tigers Coach Derek Taylor said “I thought we deserved to get more from this game but sometimes that’s how it works out, hopefully we can get ourselves rested and ready for our trip to Edinburgh in two weeks time.” Game Stats
