Civli War Letters

Duvall's Bluff, March 20,/65.

Mrs. Ursula W. Emery

Dear Wife,

I hope that this letter will find you enjoying as good health as I am. I sometimes fear that I will get as corpulent as an Alderman. I am still here at the Sanitary rooms. He has been so pleasant since the confab, that I have not felt like introducing the subject of being returned to my company. It is very probable that he will be relieved soon, and perhaps if he succeeds in getting relieved, that the new agent and I may agree very well. Mr. Moody has been so different since I gave him slight blowing up that I surmise that it had a salutary effect on him. Your last letter Dear Sula did me much good. You seemed to be in so good spirits that it sent a thrill of joy to my heart. I hope that your health will continue to improve.

We have quite pleasant weather of a few days. Today it rained some but not a great deal. Many of the troops from Brownsville and Little Rock and vicinity have gone down the Mississippi. As I write, some of the Tenth Illinois Cavalry are embarking. Their horses look pretty well.

How does our boy prosper? If he is still cutting teeth I presume that he worries considerable. I hope that he will live to repay his mother for her great care of him, by kindness and by doing all in his power for her comfort and happiness. Sula, I do not use tobacco yet, but I go the habit of drinking ale lately and I guess that I had better break off before I get too much addicted to the habit. For a spell until quite lately I was working quite hard and getting wet frequently, and as we had some very good ale, was persuaded to drink it and I find that I do not need to be persuaded to take it, and I think that I will stop it.

Well Sula as I do not have much news to relate I hope that you will excuse a dry letter, and write soon to
Your Affectionate Husband
Levi Emery.
