I wrote you on the 9th ult. Enclosing deed and revenue stamp, and begin to fear it did not reach you. I found it necessary to have a fifty cent stamp on the deed. As I wished to notify my counselor (Mr. Clark) that you had given me a quit-claim before the court set, I feel somewhat anxious about it, for I don't know exactly when the court was to be in session. Abner, as usual, refuses to sign the deed, but M. says she will. So I must wait further advice in the premises -- -- If your deed is lost, suppose I must take out another, and perhaps it will be necessary to write it for 'twain', will it? Please inform me at your earliest convenience. We are all well except colds. -- -- only that Elliot has been sick with canker in the mouth some days -- -- a little better today. About going to Minnesota this fall 'tis somewhat uncertain. Should like very much to see you all -- -- but it will probably be two or three weeks ere I get ready. Our threshing was done last week.
All the wheat on the farm ?08 bushels. My share 73 bushels. Mine of oats 24. Wheat yesterday 92c at Waterloo. 94c to be today, so we hear. N. goes with a load this P.M.
We've not sold our wool yet. Saw Mary Ann yesterday. They are pretty well. Mrs. Chapin quite ??? yesterday. Suppose you have heard of Harry Thompson's death. Spencer took care of him in his sickness. He was very prompt in his devotions we hear, though it subjected him to ridicule among the boys. Even those who ridiculed him, now that he is gone, will probably feel more certain that death to him was the beginning of a heavenly life. We hear that in some of the regiments on the Potomac quite a revival of religion is in progress. A correspondent in the Boston Recorder (which I take) states that prayer meetings are held every P.M. at Gen. Mead's headquarters and 75 conversions, it was believed were the result for the last three weeks. May they extend through every section of our army. The Christian Commission is doing much for the physical and spiritual good of our soldiers in the hospitals.
Over 1000 ministers and Christians have been on messages of mercy and every battle increases the number who need their aid. Quite a number of ministers from Vermont have been drafted. Well, I hope they will do much good. Should there be a draft in this state (Wisconsin) Harrison (Cole) would probably have to go. Perhaps there will not be.
How are your crops and how did you get along? I shall not want that money this year, I hope. Lucia wrote that Frank was home on furlough - - am glad he could come. Wish you could come and have a good meal of apples with us. We have a good supply though not as many as two years ago. Love to Mrs. K. and all the friends, especially yourself and U.
And may heaven's best blessing be yours. Remember us all in your prayers.
Your mother
B. Emery.
