Global Learning Day II Earth Image

On the number 25 bus which runs through London's East End two pensioners sat next to one another talking about the wonders of new technology.

The first pensioner, a woman, commented:

"The Internet- oh, it's so full of knowledge...."

The second pensioner, a man, interrupted:

"and so lacking of wisdom."

Adding a third voice, Universities as a community resource, on how we can improve the situation and make the net a location of useful and relevant knowledge for older persons:

"Its our job to build the web resources with older persons in the community in order to meet their needs."

Comment:
1999 is the International Year of the Older Person. In recognition of this important international issue, local authorities should be encouraged to devote resources to meeting the sociability needs of older persons: chat rooms, online video libraries, or the ability to order groceries through the internet with companies such as Tescos.
