Summary

A young call girl is murdered in a dark alley, strangled by piano wire. A vagrant sees the murder and calls the police from a phone booth in the alley. "The Keyboard Killer is here! I saw him murder a girl in the alley off of Olive..." But, his description is interrupted by the smashing of the phone booth glass and the denial of air provided by a piano wire tightly wrapped around his neck. The police arrive and the trench-coated killer hides in a night club backdoor. He sits at a table just in time to catch The Amazing Falsworth with his ESP show. Falsworth can touch anybody while blindfolded and tell something important about that person. In the audience that night he has 'A Young Couple expecting their first child... A lady wearing an expensive bracelet, the first thing she bought herself with a large inheritance. But, when he touches the killer, he drops the microphone in shock... And runs offstage. He removes his blindfold but, the table where the killer was is now empty. He tells the stage manager at the club to call the police. While in his dressing room (and after misidentifying someone as the killer) The police detective shows up. Wary of his magical abilities, the detective passively listens to Falsworths pleas and even goes to an apartment building that matches one of the magicians visions. The 2 go into the apartment and while Falsworth takes in the details of the apartment, (SPOLIER ALERT) the detective reveals himself to be the keyboard killer. There is a struggle with Falsworth overcoming in the end...

Commentary

Hyams (Running Scared, 2010) presents this suspense yarn with definite, economical camera work and 2 very respectful performances by Hines as the magician and Masur as the 'detective'. Like a well-paced short story, the viewer is presented with information only when needed. Mix this in with some of the best 'Alfred Hitchcock' mysteries.
