SAN DIEGO -- Jay Bell and Chipper Jones struck back-to-back homeruns in the 3rd inning and led a 15-hit attack as the Southern Division All Stars mauled their counterparts from the North by a score of 9-1 in front of 58,935 fans at Qualcomm Stadium.

Edgardo Alfonzo got the North on the board with a solo homerun in the 2nd and starter Randy Johnson left the mound with a 1-0 lead after 2 innings. However, the pair of solo homers by Bell and Jones ignited a 7-hit, 5-run explosion off Tom Glavine, Curt Schilling and Kevin Brown in the 3rd and 4th innings that proved to be all the offense the South needed. After winning pitcher Mike Remlinger bailed Mike Hampton out of a bases loaded jam with 1 out in the 3rd, 6 more Southern Division pitchers limited the North to 4 hits and no runs over the final 6 innings to preserve the win.

Bobby Abreu went 3-for-4 with a double for the North, but his teammates managed just 5 more hits for a meager offensive showing. The South's Eric Karros and Jason Kendall joined the fun by each singling home a pair of runs in a 4-run 8th inning that put an exclamation mark on the Southern Division's triumph. With the victory the All Star series, which dates back to 1995, now stands at 3 games a piece.
