Restating

A form of the conditional is used when information has been already mentioned.
Many times the form of the conditional is not complete. For example:

The complete conditional sentence can be restated as:

Sometime the truncated forms of the conditional, If so, if not, are used. For example:

Contrasting

Sometimes the if clause expresses an opposite or a contrast of something said previously. Many times the if clause is not present and it can be a little hard to identify the sentence as a conditional. For example:


Other contrastive connectors (however, conversely) can also be used.

Listing Alternatives

A conditional can be used to present alternatives. One main clause can have several if clauses. For example:

A conditional can be used to give examples that support a previous statement. Introductory expressions such as, for example, for instance ,can be used. For example:
