In the War of the Revolution David Newcomb shipper with his brother
Thomas, the latter part of May 1778, as marine on board the frigate
Dean, Capt. Hindham of New London; returned to Boston after capturing
two merchant vessels, one a very valuable prize; absent three months.
He served in Rhode Island on 2 Aug. 1778, under Capt. Jonathan Rudd;
discharged 12 Sept, 1778 - service under Genl. Sullivan; he also
served in the 5th Brigade of Militia, 12th Connecticut Regt. A return
for his service was signed 12 Sept. 1781, by "Jona Kyes, Brigade
Major." Mr. Newcomb was by occupation a farmer; at one time a
merchant. He was residing at Spencertown, Columbia Co., N.Y., 1792;
at Rensselaerville, Albany Co., 1798; Pelham, Mass., 1799; Tyringham,
Berkshire Co., Mass., 1804; Canaan, Columbia Co., N.Y., 1806; was
keeping hotel in Hinsdale, Columbia Co., 1810; removed to
Pennsylvania, 1813; thence to Sempronius, Cayuga Co., and afterward
to Putney, Steuben Co. [BMN 150]
