The Higher Self and Alternate Dimensions
Working from the standpoint that many people are aware that they have lived several times on the earth, it is possible to construct a model of the resulting muti-dimensioned self. Simply, this model is a bundle of glass light-fibers that is overseen by the Higher Self. Each light-fiber within the bundle represents one life strand and is thus the result of one incarnation on Earth at the human level. The Higher Self is the aspect of consciousness that stands apart from the Ego or Personal Self. The Higher Self organizes the Personal Self from incarnation to incarnation. In general, this function is undertaken without the active participation of the Higher Self in worldly life. The Higher Self is an observer standing outside time. To the Higher Self, time is everywhere and always now. To the Ego or Personal Self, which is the aspect of consciousness normally expressed in life, time appears as a translucent silver fiber. This may be termed the lifeline. In effect the Higher Self is able to view this thread from the end, much as one would the cross-section terminus of a glass-light-fiber. To continue the analogy, the Higher Self can focus at any cross-sectional depth within that fiber and any time therein is "now". The Higher Self can also view such a fiber all at once, reflect an upper section to a lower section, move instantaneously from one parallel fiber to the next to access other past-lives and so forth.
However, only the Personal Self, as comprehended INSIDE a lifeline, can act to change the degree to which that particular line obtains the character of "transluminosity". That transluminosity in turn reflects through the bundle as a whole. The radiance expressed by the terminal cross-section of the overall bundle of lives reflects the current status of the Extended Self (the soul). Clarify one line and all share the reflected light therefrom. Change one line from dark to translucent silver and the whole undergoes an order of magnitude upward shift in luminescence.
Once a particular past life has been identified a primary objective of spiritual work is the clarification of the major issues in that strand. In general, these will be the factors that induced the next life. A limited number of particularly intense emotional traumas or samscaras lie submerged within past lives affecting the overall clarity of the personality. Once these are dissolved, the possibility of direct experience of the Higher Self may be realised.
Past Life Re-determination
Past-life recall can provide information developed by the ego, the Personal Self, which has been gleaned from previous lives. This information may then be used to provide the basic input for past-life re-determination. Essentially this involves comprehending and accepting the consequences of the shortcomings and failures involved in the life under consideration. The effect of a successful re-determination results in an immediate change to the overall personality that adjusts present conditions within the real world. The essence of the technique involves regression into a past life in the course of deep meditation. The subject then proceeds to a specific point in that life, often to where an earlier moral judgment has been made, in order substitute a negative act with either a positive or a neutral act. For instance, such a life might be one in which a person has functioned as a senior army officer commanding an unnecessary act of destruction such as the annihilation of a city. The adjustment will typically involve the correction of the negative moral act by the current personality thereby reinforcing the "true way". This may be done in three steps:
Because past-life re-determination affects the present it does not refer to simply remembering the far past. It involves exactly the self-determination of past-lives by self-conscious re-structuring. This is not the same as viewing a past-life and saying "I should not have done that" in a way that might merely involve regret. It means being in the driver's seat and changing that past-life by "self determination", that is by effectively redirecting the life into a positive mode at the moment of critical choice.
That is a major way in which the future can be changed. We must keep in mind that the "future" to which we refer is the present from the perspective of the current life of the subject. Successful past-life re-determination clarifies the subject's overall personality and thereby changes their outlook for the better. This change is also often manifested as a phase-shift for an onlooker. The majority of such shifts pass by without anyone being the wiser, in other words they are seamless. Such onlookers soon re-focus their perceptions of the world if the person doing the past-life shifting is dealing with only with a small moral correction.
Now if one may admit to the fact that a person can change the future in this life by taking on a "new" attitude, then it must follow, that the same thing might be accomplished actively from within past lives. Furthermore, the agreement we observe, as reality in this life, is an agreement that we have created or fused. This has been done both in this and in all previous lives. This fusion can only be undone by disassembly, through work in past lives.
This task is far from easy. It is one thing to view a past-life, understand it (carpenter, nun, nurse etc) and to suppose that one may then have proceeded to have gone off for another "joyful attempt to rectify things in a new incarnation". It is quite another to actually change the initial error through an act of will from exactly the same position as the initial yearning dictated. The idea of adjustment itself is quite simple, but to the extent that is not accomplished, we repeat the same cycles in endless karmic knots without relief.
The reason why many people only choose to come to terms with karma in eternity is because all we can do is make a choice in this instant. However, we can select the life for which "this critical instant" will be in-focus and that means anyone can access a powerful tool for changing the world. It is clear that we can move into past-life-slots and be in the driver's seat in a deterministic mode. The mere recall of scenarios from past lives may provide a person with re-enforced knowledge of themselves it cannot be regarded as an active self-determining state. The mere act of remembering a past-life should be distinguished from living and re-directing a past-life. The only possible relevant changes arise from self-directed positive acts in past-lives where negative acts previously existed.
We may also ask the question "why not just go ahead and act on the present in order to redefine the future?" The answer to that is of course many people are trying to do just that and it forms the basis of standard political activity. Although this changes the future world somewhat it does little to alter the character of the actors and the results are largely predictable within one level of available technology or another.
Terminology
I use the term "instigator" to denote the person directly involved in the past life regression where they enter exactly into an earlier life and deliberately shift a key action from negative to positive. An "onlooker" is a person operating in this time-space, here and now. This is a person affected by the shift in phase space that takes place in response to a past-life-healing as it reflects into current space-time. It may be noted that people in the role of "onlookers" do not often notice these changes because they are usually small in themselves. The effects, involves changes that take place around the onlooker. The onlooker is usually not the same geographical location as the instigator. Time may appear to be "lost" or "gained", space may shift a bit, events move from one time-phase to another. Mostly these are so small that onlookers in general do not notice anything. It can be readily appreciated that this would be the case where relatively small adjustments are made to a past-life.
Many people have reported shifts in their normal space-time perception. One explanation to account for this is to suppose that the individual concerned may have shifted into an alternate consciousness. Another view holds that either a form of past-life-regression or even a "vision of the future" might be involved. It has also been postulated that a great number of other people by agreement might suddenly shift the reality around the person reporting such a shift. Perhaps other people may shift the dimensionality around the "passive" observer or, people in general, have the ability to shift reality any way that they want.
For instance reports of time shifting and time warps are often encountered and presumably these may be due to partial or momentary lapses in consciousness. Space warps, where a room may fold up suddenly have also been reported along with instances where a person while driving a car, found that the land suddenly skipped to another place. Particular locations, such those where a person might normally buy groceries, suddenly cause people to become lost between several city blocks or to be displaced by up to a quarter of a mile. In such cases time appears to remain the same but space shifts. A number of authors have described it well including Lynn Andrews writing about Mexico in Jaguar Woman.
However, these kinds of experience are not dominant and the world currently proceeds on the path determined by the majority of humanity. The experience of time and space shifting may well point to the existence of alternate realities and to other possibilities for development. The subjective understanding of the phenomenon is that "the place we were in is suddenly not here, not where we now are". That all of a sudden "we are somewhere else in another time", that "we are self determining that time".
