The Crew: Chico River Quest, Inc.

by Rika Lazo

These are the people, without whom, this trip would never have been.

The Host

Our host, Natividad Sugguiyao (whom we refer to as Tita Nati), heads the marketing and operations of the Chico River Quest, Inc. She is the one to contact if you want to set up a rafting adventure for your group. In addition to whitewater rafting and kayaking, she can also arrange for you to go trekking. She will also make sure that you have 3 full meals a day, along with merienda. And she will always serve you something different everyday, so it is also an adventure for your palate. Though we were housed at the Kalinga Hostel, she entertained us primarily at her house, where we also got to know 2 of her daughters, Mae and Raiza.

The River Guides

Working with Tita Nati are the different river guides. Apparently, the river guides are different for Tabuk and Tinglayan. So if you raft from Tabuk, your guides would be from Tabuk; and if you start from Tinglayan, you used Tinglayan guides. Makes sense! Since we were originally supposed to do the Tinglayan run but ended up doing the Tabuk run instead, both the guides from Tinglayan and Tabuk were there. The Tinglayan guides included Mang Moises and Roger. The Tabuk guide was Mang Danny. Also, there was Armand, Ryan, and Lapid. We learned later on that Lapid takes on several roles. Apparently, his primary role is in the kitchen as the "CO," or "Caldero Operator." But also, we noticed he was the person they always called for to do little errands, which he always did with a smile. As it turns out, Mae (the eldest daughter of Tita Nati), also serves as a guide on occasion. She is a UP Mountaineer and a graduate of the UP College of Human Kinetics, so she does have the background to be a master guide.

The Cooks

We cannot ever forget those who prepared our meals. I didn't catch their names, but they really made sure that we wouldn't go hungry. It was a feast every single time!

The Driver

The driver was the ever faithful and efficient Mang Edgar. He was there from beginning to end, from the time we got to Tabuk until we boarded the bus to Manila.

The Kalinga Hostel Staff

Ofcourse, I must also mention the staff at the Kalinga Hostel where we stayed. They were very hospitable and were always very quick to respond to our needs at the hostel. It's too bad we didn't get to spend more time with them.
