RAOK

Random Acts of Kindness

About two and a half years ago, on a Saturday morning, several of us regulars to the infamous "leather couch" were gathered in the chat room! Katy was worried about the bad snowstorm they were having in Michigan. Mary was worried about all the rain in Virginia.  In Texas, it was cold and chilly.  We were talking about the errands we all had to do; nobody wanted to get going and most of us were in nightshirts and bathrobes.  Marsi and Carolyn said it was a beautiful day in their part of the country and immediately everyone asked ***WHERE?*** They both typed in Florida and then asked each other where in Florida.  When they both typed in NPR the room went wild!  They lived only a few blocks from each other and agreed to meet that day and go for a walk.

Someone brought up something about Starbucks and then another talked about a bad experience at the mall.  Carolyn said, "If only people would practice doing a RAOK everyday the world would be a better place.  Everyone in the room that day made a pact to go out a do an RAOK and report back later.  It was an almost magical time that morning, not ever to be repeated.  We logged off and within a few days we all posted our ROAK's back to everyone.  Carolyn Chen practiced this almost every day of her life. It did not matter who you were, what you looked like, or your position in life.  She did it just because we are all members of the human race in this world and therefore no one was better than anyone else!

Below is a link to the ***ROAK***site.  Maybe you could go there sometime and read about all the RAOK's that are done for other's.  You can nominate people for their award and link any web pages you have to them.  I have started the process of having Carolyn Chen's name placed there.  Carolyn encountered a lot of discrimination in her life because of her race and handicaps.  Yet, she never lashed out at anyone and instead tried to get them to see that she was no different than they were.  What a better place this world would be if we all practiced doing a RAOK everyday.  It doesn't have to be something big.  It can be as small as a smile :) to someone that's feeling down.  What better way to honor both Carolyn and Marsi by trying to do an ROAK!
