Fan Fiction - "Cranes Go To Paris"
By Martin Crane
"Good show today Frasier," said Roz.
"Thanks Roz," replied Frasier as he took off his headphones. "I think I even outsmarted myself today." He chuckled at his own joke. Roz just smirked.
"How's your packing going?" Frasier asked. Roz and Alice were heading to Paris to visit Alice's father Rick. Rick had recently gotten engaged to a woman named Clarice, and he wanted Alice to meet her stepmother to be. Frasier and Martin would be joining them, as Martin was going to Paris to visit an old army friend and Frasier wanted to visit the various museums in the city.
"Oh fine," Roz answered. "Plane tickets, passports, changing my money to francs..."
"Euros, Roz," corrected Frasier. "France now uses euros. It's like you losing a boyfriend. France lost Frank, Germany lost Mark..."
"Very funny Frasier," said Roz. "I bet you've been packed for weeks."
"No, actually, I'm only half done. I've been busy sorting out things like puppysitting Eddie."
"Niles and Daphne?"
"Yep, well, in theory. I think Daphne will be doing all the work!" laughed Frasier.
"Hey Dad, Frasier!" The cheery voice of Niles Crane announced his presence as he and Daphne walked through the door.
"Hey Niles, Daph," said Martin, rising to meet his son and daughter in law.
"Marty, take a look at these." Daphne gave her father in law two tickets. Martin read what was on them. It was two tickets for a free holiday in Paris - for the same 2 weeks that Frasier, Martin and Roz would be there.
"Where'd you get these?" Martin asked.
"I won them in a raffle," Daphne explained. "They have to be used on these days. Maybe you could use them."
"Sorry, they're of no use to me, we've already booked our holiday and paid for it and everything," Martin told her.
"Oh well," said Daphne, "we can find someone who will want them."
"We could use them," suggested Niles. Neither Daphne nor Martin noticed, but Niles had a slight smirk on his face. He was making a plan. "We could have a romantic holiday."
"That's a good idea," Daphne answered, but then she remembered Eddie. "What about Eddie?"
"Ah," said Martin. "But it does seem like a shame to let those tickets go to waste. Hang on, let me see what Duke is doing."
As Martin phoned Duke, Daphne turned to Niles. "Are you sure?" she asked. "You're not busy for those 2 weeks?"
"No, my office is being redecorated for the second week and the week after we come back, I'll just reschedule it so all the decorating is done when we're away." He got out his cellphone and began talking as Martin hung up.
"Duke can look after Eddie, that means you guys can come with us," he said.
"Hello everyone," said Frasier as he entered the apartment.
"Hi Fras, guess who's coming with us?" Martin asked.
"Dad, I told you Eddie was to stay at home!"
"No, not Eddie. Eddie's going on holiday with Duke. No, Niles and Daphne are coming with us!"
"It's affirmative," said Niles hanging up. "I've rescheduled the decorating, and Mrs Woodson is rescheduling my patients. The Cranes are going to Paris!"
"Do you want anything to drink?" the stewardess asked Martin. The group was in the central aisle in the plane, in 4 seats next to each other. Martin was on the end, next to Frasier, who was next to Roz, who was next to Alice at the other end. Niles and Daphne were on another flight.
"Uh yeah, I'll have a beer please," Martin told her.
"I'll have a glass of wine please," Frasier told her.
She gave them their drinks and moved off. Martin returned to his in flight movie.
"This Down Periscope movie is quite funny," he chuckled, "although the lead actor looks a bit familiar."
"Dad, everyone you know seems to remind you of someone on screen," replied Frasier, "such as you think that Daphne looks like a Benny Hill dancer."
"I bet Niles hopes so too," chuckled Martin.
Meanwhile Roz was chatting to a man opposite her, named Jean. He was returning to Paris after a 3 week stay in Seattle. Roz was pleased that his English was perfect and fluent. Unlike her previous French boyfriend whom she had had to ask Frasier to break up with him for her. Roz didn't know of course but Frasier had been talking about restaurants!
"You look very pretty," Jean was telling her. "And this. Is she yours?"
"Yes," said Roz proudly, referring to the sleeping Alice. "My little angel. We're going to see her father."
"Her father is French?"
"No, American, but he lives in Paris. He went there to study for a year and managed to get a job, so he stayed there and is doing very well."
"Ladies and gentleman, we will be landing in about 10 minutes. Please make sure your seatbelts are fastened."
The Cranes and Doyles walked through Charles de Gaulle airport, and were now waiting for Niles and Daphne's flight to arrive in 20 minutes time. Frasier had bought himself a newspaper and was boring Martin by translating it and reading all the boring stories to him. Not the good ones such as the ones about sports, Martin thought.
Martin turned to Roz. "Roz, isn't that the guy you were talking to?"
"Yeah, it is! You know, I got on quite well with him, I think he likes me."
"I disagree," said Martin as a woman came up to Jean and kissed him. "Ma femme!" Jean told the woman. "Tu me manques!"
"What does that mean?" Roz asked Frasier.
"'My wife! I missed you!'" Frasier told her. "Sorry Roz."
"That's OK," said Roz sadly. "I'm kind of used to attracting the married ones by now." She thought of the one man in recent months who had made her happy and smiled a bit, but that was all over with now. She couldn't do it with him again.
"Hello all!" said Niles as he and Daphne arrived. "God, it feels good to be back in Paris after all these years!" Niles of course had lived in Paris for a year when he was younger.
"You'll have to show me all the places you visited," Daphne told him. She had never been to Paris before.
"Come on, let's go," said Frasier. "We have our hotel to go to."
Niles had managed to book him and Daphne into the same hotel as everyone else, and their room was next to Frasier and Martin's room. That in turn was opposite Roz and Alice's room, and the three were at the end of the corridor, so there would be no-one walking past all the time. They had this bit of the hotel to themselves.
All 3 rooms had 2 single beds, but Niles and Daphne had pushed theirs together to make a double bed. Whilst Martin took Alice for a walk, Roz talked to Frasier.
"It's not fair," she said sadly. "A few years back, I'd have a man, have sex a few times and then move onto someone else. Now I want a relationship, and men are doing to me what I used to do to them. I never seem to attract the good men, men who want to be with me for me and not just sex."
"Well, uh, what about Roger?"
"He dumped me, remember? Three weeks later I saw him with another woman. She was about 10 years younger than me and had breasts so big you could camp under them."
"Roz, don't worry. The right man will come along very soon. And if all else fails, you still have me, as your best friend."
"That's right. Thanks Frasier," smiled Roz as she kissed him in a just friends style. Ever since their little encounter, Frasier and Roz had decided that they didn't want to be lovers, just best friends.
"Have you contacted Rick yet?" Frasier asked.
"Yeah, we're going to his house this evening. Um, do you want to come? Oh, and your dad too if he wants!" Roz added quickly. Frasier noticed how quickly Roz had added on the last sentence, but said nothing.
"No, you and Alice need some time with Rick and his girlfriend alone, if you know what I mean. Get to know each other. It'll be better without me and Dad there. But thanks for the offer, maybe another day."
Roz was nervous as she and Alice got out of the taxi at Rick's house. Carrying her daughter up the steps she knocked on the door. There was no answer. She knocked on the door again.
"Hello?" she called.
The door opened and a woman stood there. She looked American. Roz guessed this was Clarice, the soon to be Mrs Rick Garrett.
"Um, hello, I'm Roz Doyle and this is my daughter Alice."
"Oh yes, Rick's little girl, come in."
Roz entered the house. She was amazed as to how tidy it was. She guessed it was Clarice's and that Rick had moved in with her. There were pictures on the wall, a few of Clarice, a few of Rick, a few of them together, one of Rick's parents and one of Rick and Alice when he had come to visit her a year back.
"I'm Clarice," Clarice said. "I'll call him down. Rick, they're here!"
Rick came running down the stairs. "Hey everyone!"
"Daddy!" called Alice, running up to her father. Rick scooped his daughter up and gave her a hug.
"Hi munchkin, how've you been? You been good for Mom?"
"Oh yes," said Alice sweetly. Rick kissed Roz. "Hi Roz, how are you?"
"Fine thanks," she told him. Rick gave Alice back to her mother and hugged Clarice.
"Roz, Alice, this is Clarice." They all said their hellos. "She's my girlfriend," Rick told Alice, "and I'm going to marry her soon."
Alice wasn't bothered by this, she thought it was really cool. Seeing as she had never known having her parents together, for they had parted before her birth, she thought Daddy getting married was no big deal, as long as:
"Can I come and wear a pretty dress?"
"Sure you can!" Rick told his daughter. "That is, if Mom says yes." Roz nodded her head.
"Dinner anyone?" Clarice asked them. When everyone was sat around the table, she served up a roast dinner. During the meal, Clarice and Alice got to know each other and much to Rick's relief, got on very well. Roz turned to Rick.
"So, how did you two meet?"
"It was quite funny," chuckled Rick. "I bumped into her in the streets. Just like in those films where the hero meets his girl. She even had groceries in her arms. I helped her up and the rest is history. We've been together now for a year."
"Good for you," said Roz. The two talked about recent events in each other's lives, such as Roz breaking up with Roger, Niles and Daphne getting married and Rick's mom having an accident with her hair dye and ending up with purple hair. After dinner Roz offered to wash the dishes so Alice could spend some time with her dad and stepmom to be.
As she washed up, she realised how perfect Clarice seemed to be. She was beautiful, friendly, funny, a good cook, kept a clean house, loved and adored Rick and looked set to love Alice as well. Rick had done very well finding Clarice. Roz hoped she would find a man that perfect one day. There was one man she'd had her eyes on, but would it be true love? Roz sighed to herself, wondering, as she washed the cups.
"And this is where I had the misfortune to trip over a poodle," Niles Crane told his wife. "I was just walking alone when suddenly it tried to attack me! It rubbed itself against my leg, and in my haste to escape I tripped over it."
Daphne smiled. She was enjoying her tour of Paris. Niles had shown her the building where he had stayed and told her about his escapades there, he had shown her the coffee bar where he had "hung out" (which was now a sci-fi shop much to Niles' disgust) and on the way they had seen many Parisian landmarks such as the Arc d'Triomphe and the Louvre. The Cranes were now in a small park not far from the city center.
"Niles, let's sit down on this bench," Daphne suggested.
"All right, my love," Niles smiled back. They sat down, holding hands and looking at the sunset together.
"Isn't this romantic?" he whispered in her ear. She giggled.
"Yeah," she sighed happily. "It's perfect." They leant into kiss.
"What do you say we go back to the hotel and..." Niles whispered the rest into Daphne's ear and again she giggled.
"Good idea," she said. Holding hands, the couple walked through the park to get a taxi to the hotel. They didn't notice the woman staring oddly at them.
"You'll like Claude," Martin told Frasier as they left the taxi. "We met in Korea. I was with the US army, he with the French..."
"I know Dad, you've told us lots of times," Frasier interrupted. "You became friends and after the war you became a cop and he became a lawyer. You stayed in contact after Korea, but lost it again 15 years ago. And now you've found him again."
"No thanks to you though," said Martin as he rang the doorbell. "Thanks to you and that Reunited website. we really owe you one Fras."
The door opened and a man stood there.
"Claude?" Martin asked. "It's Marty Crane." The man smiled.
"Marty! Come in."
Martin and Frasier walked in.
"Oh, and this is Frasier. You e-mailed him a while back. You remember Frasier?"
"Oh yes, you told me about your boys when you wrote to me. How is your wife?"
"Um, Hester passed on in 1986," said Martin sadly.
"I am sorry, I did not know. My wife also passed on - last year," Claude said.
Frasier was impressed. There were a lot of antiques around the place.
"Dear God, is this what I think it is? A 1969 La Salle vase?"
"That's right."
"I've always wanted one of those," Frasier said.
"I didn't know you were into antiques," said Martin to Claude.
"Well, when retired, Marie and I decided to get a hobby. And when her aunt died and left her that vase, we liked it so much we decided to start collecting antiques. Would you like to see some of my collection?"
"Yes please! Oh, I bet Niles wishes he was here," said Frasier as he followed Claude.
"That was a wonderful dinner," said Roz as she rejoined Rick and his girlfriend. "So have you guys set a date yet?"
"Actually, we have," said Rick happily. "November 12th, in Chicago. That's where most of Clarice's very large family live, so it's easier to go there. My folks and my brother will be there - and Alice of course. Would you like to come too?"
"Oh, no thanks," said Roz. "It would be a little bit strange. But thanks anyway."
The rest of the evening seemed to go for a long time, according to Roz. Rick and Clarice seemed so happy together, it made her sick. It wasn't fair at all.
It's not fair at all, Martin Crane thought as he ate his dinner that Claude had made them. Claude should be with me, not Frasier!
It seemed to Martin that Claude got on a lot better with Frasier than he did with Martin! Claude and Frasier had talked antiques over dinner, and Martin didn't have much of a clue what they were on about.
"So Claude, you played much golf recently?" he asked, trying to change the subject.
"No, not really," said Claude. "Not since I broke my leg a few months back. The cast only came off last week. And now it's better, the course has been closed for a few days due to all that rain we've been having."
"Shame," chuckled Martin. "I bought my clubs and all."
"How do you play golf with your hip like that?"
"I manage," smiled Martin.
"Claude," interrupted Frasier, "this recipe is divine. You couldn't happen to give it to me, could you?"
"No Frasier," laughed Claude. "Family recipe. A secret. But I could give you a recipe for what your next course will be..."
"What the hell are you doing?" Martin asked his son as they left Claude's a couple of hours later. "Talking about antiques all night!"
"We had something in common Dad," Frasier told him. "He liked talking about it."
"Look Fras, I haven't seen him for 15 years and thanks to you he ignored me!"
"You? What about when you spent half an hour talking about your old golf games? You think I had fun then?"
The argument continued on the way back to the hotel. Both Frasier and Martin felt they were being left out of things with Claude.
Niles collected his hotel room key and he and Daphne went up to their room, not noticing the woman who came in behind them and spoke to the receptionist. Daphne went into the bathroom to start running a bath as Niles opened a bottle of champagne. There was a knock on the door as Niles was half way through pouring his glass. Mumbling to himself, Niles went to answer it. The woman was standing in the doorway.
"Dr Crane, how nice to see you again!"
Niles' jaw dropped.
"Yvette?"
"Yes Niles, it is I, your love."
Daphne came from the bathroom. "Niles, who is it?"
"Uh, Daphne, this is Yvette, my, um, girlfriend in Paris." Daphne glared at him, before he added "From when I lived here all those years ago."
"Who is this?" Yvette asked of Daphne. Niles told her, "My wife."
"Oh," Yvette said quietly before adding. "You don't want me then?"
"What are you talking about? I'm a happily married man," said Niles.
"It won't work. What will work is us." Yvette gave Niles a hug, and she wrapped his arms around her. Niles noticed Daphne glaring at him, a bit angrily, a bit in a "what the hell is going on?" way and a bit sad. He took a deep breath and turned to Yvette.
"It won't work, you and me. Firstly, I'm married, to the most beautiful woman on the planet and I wouldn't trade her for all the euros in the world." He kissed Daphne and held her close to him. "Secondly, it didn't work then and it won't work now. When we were together, you never listened to what I was sa-"
"But I've changed!" Yvette told him. "I listen, I, I care..."
"You just interrupted me then," said Niles, trying to free himself from her. "Yvette, I do care about you, I care about everyone it's my job, but when I was with you, I never got a word in or got to do anything I wanted. I've moved on since then, I've changed too. I'm sorry, but even if I were available, it wouldn't work." He paused. "I think you should leave."
Yvette glared at Daphne, then pulled Niles forward and let go of Niles. Niles of course fell on Yvette after losing his balance, and she turned around and left. Daphne turned to her husband.
"Oh, Niles, you were brilliant."
"I should have said that to Maris a long time ago," Niles replied, "and then maybe we could have been together a lot sooner."
Daphne shut the door, proud of the fact that her husband could now stand up to women after all these years. Yvette watched the door close as she waited for the elevator, and when it arrived Frasier and Martin got off as she got on.
The Cranes walked to their room in silence. Frasier tried to break the ice.
"Dad, how about we go stand on top of the Eiffel Tower tomorrow?"
"Sure, whatever you want." Martin's reply was short and blunt as he opened the door. He didn't care. He was still a bit cross about the whole Claude thing.
"Dad, look, I'm sorry! I thought you'd be glad that Claude and I got on so well."
"Frasier, I hadn't seen him in 15 years!"
"Yes, I know, but I didn't mean to steal him! Look, he and I have something in common, the love of antiques. He and you have something in common, your many years of friendship." Frasier paused. "We can share him. We can all be friends. I mean, look at Mom. She loved taking Niles and I to the opera and she also loved going to a baseball game with you."
Martin realised his son was right.
"You're right, Fras, I overacted a bit. I'm sorry."
"Me too Dad."
"Hey, I know what! Tomorrow why don't we introduce him to the whole family?"
"Tomorrow afternoon should do," said Frasier. "Tomorrow morning, you and Claude can spend it together."
"Thanks son," said Martin as he turned the TV on. "Which channel was CNN again? I want to check the sports scores."
Frasier found CNN as he heard a door shut. "Oh, sounds like Roz is back, I'll go see her," he told his father. Frasier stepped outside and knocked on Roz's door.
"Roz? It's me."
A few moments later, Roz opened the door.
"How did things go?" asked Frasier as he stepped inside.
"Oh, Rick was great, his girlfriend was good looking, Alice liked her, she's staying the night with them - oh Frasier, why can't I be that lucky? They were devoted to each other. I would give up anything - except my daughter of course - to have what they have."
"Oh Roz, come here," Frasier said and gave her a hug. "You'll find someone one day. When you least expect it. It could, uh, could even be someone right under your nose. I mean, just look at Niles and Daphne. They knew each other for 7 years before realising they were each other's soulmates. The right man could be just under your nose."
"You're right, Frasier. Thanks."
"You're welcome. Why don't you join us for lunch with Dad's friend tomorrow?"
"Yeah, why not. Thanks Frasier."
After leaving a note for Niles and Daphne with an invitation to join them for luck tomorrow (for some reason, they didn't answer the door, and Frasier was sure he could hear Daphne repeatedly saying Niles' name...) Frasier went to bed.
Martin Crane woke up and looked at the clock. It was 6.42am. A little bit too early to get up. But his hip hurt a bit and had woken him up. Martin turned over and got himself comfortable. He snuggled down and prepared to go to sleep.
"Police!"
Martin opened an eye. Was he dreaming about his days on the force? Usually his colleagues didn't have French accents... He heard a loud noise, like someone kicking a door down. This was no dream. Martin got out of bed and walked to the door. Opening it, he saw the door to Niles' room was open.
"What the hell?"
Policemen were in the room, holding Niles and handcuffing his wrists. Daphne was next to him, shouting at the policemen. One of them was speaking slowly to her. Martin guesses he was the only one who could speak English.
"Your husband is coming with is, Mme Crane."
"Niles hasn't done anything!"
"He has been accused of assault against a Mlle Yvette Pompidou."
Martin entered the room. "Assault?"
As the police turned to Martin, Niles wailed, "Dad, it's not true! I never laid a finger on her!"
Even though he didn't know who this Yvette was, Martin turned to the English speaking policeman. "My son has never hit a woman in his life!"
His words fell on deaf ears. Niles was marched away, Daphne following behind. By now Roz had come to see what was going on along with most of the other guests. Martin quickly filled her in and then went back into his room to get Frasier.
Frasier wasn't there!
"Frasier!" Martin yelled. "Frasier! Where are you?" Martin turned, looking for his son, not noticing Roz's face turn slightly red as she went back into her room. Roz walked over to her bed and kicked the lump on the other side of
"Hey, wake up. Your brother's been arrested."
As Frasier sat up in shock, he also realised that when he had gone to bed last night, he hadn't gone into his bed. Or even his room...
An hour later Frasier, Martin and Roz were at the police station. Each was silent as they waited for news. Eventually Daphne came out of the interview room and walked over.
"What's going on?" Martin asked his daughter-in-law.
"Yesterday, an old girlfriend of Niles' came to our hotel room and said she wanted to be with him. They dated for a while when he lived here. Of course Niles turned her down. I mean, the cheek of it, asking a married man to leave his wife for someone he hasn't seen for years! Anyway, she must have gone to the police station and said Niles assaulted her for her revenge against him for turning him down. Niles wouldn't hurt a fly. She said that she had turned him down and then he attacked her!"
"What's happening to him?" Roz asked.
"He could face jail!" Daphne sobbed.
In his cell, Niles wondered why Yvette would put him through this. How could she think he would give up the woman of his dreams to be with a woman he had not seen for a couple of decades? True, he had lost his virginity to Yvette, but that was not all she had taken from him. She had been partly responsible for him letting women - such as Maris or Mel - walk all over him. And when she had made him cuddle her yesterday in the hotel room, and she had used that as "proof" that he had touched her.
He thought of Daphne. She had stayed in the police station with him. She had also been interviewed as she had been a witness to the "assault" and she had told the police exactly what had happened." Good for her! Daphne would always be there for him at least.
Martin went over to a public phone and dropped in some coins. He dialled a number and when the person on the other end answered, Martin began speaking.
Frasier and Roz were also talking in private.
"Um, Roz, about last night..."
"Oh, yeah, um..." Neither of them knew what to say. "I guess we did it again," Roz said awkwardly.
"Yes, yes, yes, we did."
"That's what you said in bed last night," said Roz, a small smile on her face. Frasier turned to her.
"Roz, we weren't drunk, were we?"
"No, I hadn't drunk anything all night."
"Nor me." There was more silence. Roz then said, "I was lonely though."
"Me too," Frasier replied. "I haven't had a date for months." The two looked at each other. They had slept together twice now. The second time they couldn't even blame the drink. They knew each other's quirks and delights. Both were lonely. Could it be...?
Frasier and Roz both turned away uncomfortably.
"Roz..."
"Frasier..." Both said each other's names at the same time. They then both said, "Do you love me or something?"
They realised they were both saying the same thing and laughed.
"There's only one way to find out," said Frasier, and he kissed Roz.
"You're right," she said after the kiss. "I did find my special somebody when I least expected it."
They were interrupted by Martin. "Hey Frasier, help is here!"
Frasier turned around to see Claude next to Martin. "Claude?"
"I gave him a call," Martin explained. "He's going to defend Niles. Niles' trail begins at 2."
"2pm today? That's pretty quick!"
"There was a cancellation," Claude explained. "The man on trial escaped by hiding on a truck full of wigs."
"Talk about hair today, gone tomorrow," muttered Frasier, and Roz giggled.
"I persuaded the chief to let us use the slot. It starts at 2 promptly."
Claude went to talk to Daphne, but Martin was staring at his son and Roz.
"Why are you two holding hands?" he asked.
Claude and Daphne followed the police officer to Niles' cell. Daphne was worried sick. What if Niles was found guilty?
The three heard voices. One of them was Niles. The other was a French woman. Both were speaking in English.
"Yvette! How did you get down here?"
"I just told them I needed to use the bathroom, and 'slipped' down here. Clumsy me," Yvette said with a smile. "You chose not to be with me, you must suffer."
"Yvette, if I am so important to you, how come it is only now you want to be with me? Why didn't you ever track me down?"
"I tried, mon cher. I tried. I also tried to forget you. You helped my three marriages break down. I couldn't stop thinking of you. So when I found out you were here in Paris, I had to have you But you broke my heart again. So you had to pay."
"But assault?"
"You touched me."
"I fell on you by mistake!"
"The police don't have to know that, do they? But if you promise to be with me, I'll drop all charges."
"That won't be necessary," the police officer told Yvette in French. He, Claude and Daphne had heard everything. "You're coming with us."
That evening, everyone was at a restaurant serving the finest French food. Niles had been freed of all charges and Yvette was now facing a sentence for wasting police time and perverting the course of justice. Niles was just pleased that everything was back to normal.
Well, almost everything. Frasier took his spoon and tapped his glass. "Attention, everyone. Roz and I have an announcement to make." Martin, Niles, Daphne, Claude, Rick, Clarice and Alice all fell quiet. Martin was the only person who knew what was coming next.
"As you know, Roz and I first met on May 21st 1993. We started out as colleagues, and eventually became friends, then best friends, and now, we proudly wish to tell you all we are dating." Roz stood proudly next to Frasier. "Over the years, both of us fell in love with each other but were too worried to say it in case it ruined our friendship. We dealt with it by making fun of each other and each other's love lives. But this little trip to Paris made us realise we want to be together."
The others all cheered. Rick turned to Roz.
"Looks like you'll have a date for my wedding now," he said. "Congratulations."
"Thanks Rick," smiled Roz as she hugged him. "Your dreams came true in the city of romance. Now mine have too."
"A toast," said Martin, "to friendship. Between old war buddies, or the love of your life," he said, looking at Roz and Frasier, Niles and Daphne, and Rick and Clarice.
"To friendship!" the others said, before Frasier added, "For ever."
