Fan Fiction - "September 11th"
Note by the author: Like the majority of people around the world, I was horrified by what happened on that fateful day. Friends of mine had visited the WTC just days before the disaster, and I kept thinking "What if it had been them?" Then when I heard that David & Lynn Angell had perished in the disaster.....
This story is dedicated to them and everyone else who died that day. Also to the emergency services of NY and Washington, many of who sacrificed their lives to save others.
We'll never forget you.
Tuesday
September 11th, 2001
5.50AM Pacific Time
Ring, ring. Ring, ring.
Daphne groaned as she woke up. Damn 'phone. She'd only had a few hours sleep. Mr Crane's hip had hurt in the night and she and Dr Crane had had to wake up to help Mr Crane tend to it.
Daphne looked at the clock. 5.51. God, was it really this early? Yawning, she answered the 'phone.
"Hello?....No, sorry you've got the wrong number. There is no Theodore here. Yes, bye bye."
Daphne replaced the 'phone. She was too awake now to go back to sleep. Maybe she'd take a nap this afternoon. After all, it didn't look like anything would happen today.
Daphne yawned again and got out of bed. Might as well shower now, she thought as she undressed.
Daphne thought about home whilst in the shower. What time was it in Manchester? Probably about five to two in the afternoon. Maybe she'd 'phone her parents after breakfast.
Daphne was in the shower for about 5 minutes. Afterwards she got out and walked back into her room. She turned the radio on. Daphne liked to have the radio on whilst she dressed. She like to know what was going on that day, or the problems Dr Mary's morning show would have. Dr Mary was on vacation this week, so Dr Crane was filling in for her.
"This just in....." an announcer cut in. Daphne listened with horror.
"Mr Crane!!!" she yelled as she ran towards Martin's room.
KACL studios
2 minutes earlier
"We'll be right back after the news," Bonnie Weems said as she hit the off air button. "God, I need the bathroom," she muttered once checking she was off air.
Frasier and Roz entered the studios. Although Dr Mary's show didn't begin until 6.30, they were in the studio to discuss some reports with Kenny. Frasier was glad that he only had to get up early this one week.
I don't know how Mary does it, he thought.
"Well Roz, how was your date last night?"
"Great, apart from one thing. He had his ex on the 'phone all night and kept telling her how much of a good time he was having. At least one of us enjoyed it." Roz moaned. "Oh, is your dad still OK for babysitting Alice tomorrow night?"
"Yeah, you know much he loves her. Although he hurt his hip last night in his sleep. We were up hours last night."
"My God, is he OK?"
"Yeah, he'll be fine this afternoon," replied Frasier. "Niles and Daphne are taking him to the hospital for a check-up at 4."
"Well, I'll come and see him."
"Thanks Roz, he'd like that."
Neither of them noticed members of staff running towards the office behind them during the conversation. They didn't notice Kenny leave his office looking horrified. They only noticed something when Kenny burst into the office.
"Doc, Roz, quick! Turn onto the news!"
"Kenny, what's the matter?" asked Frasier.
"You'll see," Kenny whispered as Roz turned on the news.
"News just in, a plane has crashed into the World Trade Center."
The three sat there horrified. Neither said a word.
Elliot Bay Towers - continuous
"Oh my God!!!" Martin Crane exclaimed as he, Daphne and Eddie sat around the radio. The announcer said that a flight from Boston had crashed.
KACL - continuous
"Boston???" Frasier said, horrified. "Oh my God! I have to make a few 'phone calls."
"My mother lives in NY," Bonnie Weems said. "I need to call her!"
Roz and Kenny watched as everyone ran to the 'phones. Then realising they all had cell phones, they used those instead. The two walked outside.
"OK," Kenny said, "we need to keep Seattle updated about this. This day will live in history, a tragic accident. We need to stay calm."
Elliot Bay Towers - 16 minutes later
Martin and Eddie hadn't moved at all. Daphne had quickly 'phoned home to see if her family were OK. Her brother Peter and his wife were planning to come to NY in a few days time. After finding out everyone was OK, Daphne returned to Martin's room.
"Do you want to watch the news on TV?" she asked.
"Yeah please, could you help me up?"
Daphne helped Martin to his chair. She sat him down and turned the TV on. A news reporter was on the scene.
"Officials say it was a tragic accident. The 'plane approached the tower much like that plane is now.....oh my God, it's happened again!"
Martin and Daphne watched the second plane crash into the second tower. People in NY were screaming.
"My God, it's world war three," Martin whispered.
KACL - continuous
The people at KACL sat in the booth listening to the news. When they heard about the second crash they started to panic.
"People. People!" Frasier called. "Calm down! Remember what Kenny said."
They were in silence once again as they listened to the news. Frasier thought about those he knew and loved. He'd tried 'phoning home but is was engaged. Daphne on the 'phone again he'd thought. He'd then called Lilith and Frederick. They'd been watching the TV after one of Lilith's friends had 'phoned to tell them. After talking to them, he'd then called Sam Malone and Norm Peterson. Both were OK, but Cliff wasn't in. Frasier was beginning to worry. Cliff had told him over the 'phone a few days ago that he and his mother were going to LA on Tuesday, and Frasier hoped to God they weren't on that flight, which by now had been revealed as Flight 11.
His cellphone rang. It was Niles.
"Frasier, have you heard the news?"
"Course I have Niles. I was here when it was announced."
"No, one of Dad's friends might have been on that flight."
"As may have been one of mine....."
Later that day
Frasier and Roz had gone back to Roz's place. For security reasons, both the Elliot Bay Towers and the Montana had been evacuated, so everyone was staying with Roz that night. Daphne, Martin, Eddie and Niles were already there, all glued to the TV.
"Anyone want a drink?" Frasier asked. He went and got 5 cans of beer for everyone.
"May I have a drink too please?" asked Alice.
"Of course you may sweetheart," smiled Frasier. "Come with me and choose what you want."
Maybe it'll take my mind off Cliff, he thought.
Everyone else stayed in the living room. The newsreaders were now confirming that 4 flights had been hijacked and crashed. When the newsreaders announced Flight 11 had been confirmed, Martin started to cry.
"What's wrong Marty?" Roz asked.
"It's Dave and Lynn," Martin sniffed. "They were on that flight."
"They were friends of his from work," Daphne explained. "They were on their way home after holidaying in Boston."
"There, there Dad, it's OK." Niles said to his father, hugging him.
Frasier's cellphone rang. Daphne answered. "Hello?....yes, he's here. Just a tic. Dr Crane, it's Mr Clavin."
Frasier snatched the 'phone. "Hello? Cliff, thank God you're OK.....Good God, no."
It turned out that Cliff and his mom were safe. They'd been booked onto the next flight after the hijacked one and were still in the airport. After talking to Cliff for a few minutes, Frasier said his goodbyes and hung up. He looked at Martin, who was hugging Eddie and crying into him.
Poor Dad. His friends weren't so lucky.
That evening
Frasier was on the air. Kenny had thought it a good idea if he were there to comfort people who may have lost loved ones in NY that day. A caller, Jane, was on the air.
"Dr Crane, I lost my sister in that disaster. I still *sniff* can't believe she's gone. *Sniff* Excuse me Dr Crane, I shouldn't be crying on air."
"Jane, you've suffered a tragic loss in a most horrific way," Frasier replied. "Don't feel ashamed about crying. Many other people will be in tears too. It will help you overcome your grief. You see, I too nearly lost someone in NY today. A friend of mine was at the airport to fly to LA, and I wondered if he'd been on that flight. I was lucky, he wasn't, but many people, my father included, were not.
So before I hand you back to the news team for an update on the day's events, let me tell you this Seattle. Many people lost their lives today through the work of truly evil people. There will be many of us weeping for lost loved ones, people we'll never see again. And the best way to overcome grief is firstly to let it all out. Cry. Talk to someone. Let them know how you feel. Then sit back and think of all the happy times you spent with that person.
And one more thing. Today will live in history. We must remember that this was not the work of Islam. It was the work of evil terrorists. So remember, many Muslims lost friends or relatives today too. Attacking them will not do any good. It is only by uniting together that we can beat these terrorists."
"Thanks Dr Crane," Jane said. "I'll do that."
"This is Dr Frasier Crane, KACL. I'll be back tomorrow. See you then." And Frasier signed off.
Roz entered the booth. "That was truly touching Frasier," she said.
"I hope something good does come out of today," Frasier said to her. "What, I don't know. But I hope it does, and that some day we'll all be able to live in peace."
"Come on Frasier, let's go home." Roz said. "It's a whole new world from tonight."
