John Mahoney, despite his all-American voice, has a surprise to his viewers. He's actually British!!! John was born on June 20th 1940 in Manchester (the hometown of Daphne).

After finishing school in the UK, John emigrated to the USA. He joined the US Army and worked on losing his British accent. In the army, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Quincy College and a Masters in English from Western Illinois University. After leaving the Army, John tried his hand at many other careers, including teaching, working in hospitals and editing a magazine. He was also briefly married. All of these left him feeling unfulfilled, so he decided to give acting a go.

John went to acting classes at St Nicholas Theater, Chicago (where he still lives today). He performed with actor John Malkovich, who invited John Mahoney to join the Steppenwolf Theater Company. John has appeared in over 30 of their productions. It was one of these, House of Blue Leaves, which won him a Tony award. Other awards for this play include a Clarence Derwent Award and a Drama Desk nomination. Another Drama Desk nomination and a Theater World Award were awarded to him for his role in Orphans.

In 1993 John won the role of Martin Crane in Frasier. He flies into LA from his home in Chicago for the filming. This wasn't the first time he'd worked with Kelsey Grammer - John had guest starred in an episode of Cheers as Sy Flembeck, a postman. His role as Martin has won John a Golden Globe nomination as Best Supporting Actor.

John is known through the cast as a man who often gets his words mixed up. One time he said "place mats" instead of "throw pillows" for some reason, and this became a running joke on the set - now, if anyone forgets their lines or someone's name they just say place mats. John is also set to be one of the jokers on the set. He also likes classical music and the opera, unlike Martin!

In 1994, John made his directorial debut at Steppenwolf with the production of Talking Heads. This was a play made up of a series of monologues. He was seen on stage at Steppenwolf in 1998 in The Man Who Came to Dinner.

John's film credits include such films as Say Anything, She's the One, Primal Fear, Barton Fink, Suspect, The Russia House, The American President, Frantic, Betrayed, Eight Men Out, The Manhattan Project, and Striking Distance. On TV he starred on the series The Human Factor, H.E.L.P. and Lady Blue. He has also appeared in the NBC miniseries Favorite Son; and in such television movies as Will, Dinner at Eight, and The Image. He has also lent his voice to The Iron Giant and most recently Disney's Atlantis: The Lost Empire.
