Allen Kelsey Grammer was born on February 21st 1955 in St Thomas, US Virgin Islands. He was bought up by his mum and grandad in New Jersey and Florida. His grandfather died when Kelsey was 11. Kelsey was drawn into the world of Shakespeare after his grandfather died and this made him decide to go into theatre. He performed his first play - Little Foxes - whilst he was in high school. After encouragement by his teachers, he decided to take up acting as a career. Kelsey trained at the Juilliard School for two years. Afterwards he was accepted by the Old Globe Theater in San Diego, where he spent three years performing in classic works by Shakespeare and George Bernard Shaw such as The Winter's Tale and A Midsummer Night's Dream. He also met Dan Butler (Bulldog) here for the first time.

Kelsey has appeared in the off-Broadway productions of Sunday in the Park with George, A Month in the Country, Plenty and Quartermaine's Terms, which won him an Obie. He has performed Macbeth and Othello on Broadway, and recently he has appeared in Richard II in Los Angeles, playing the title character.

Kelsey's TV credits include appearances in US soaps One Life To Live, Another World and Guiding Light; prime time shows such as The Tracy Ullman Show and of course, Cheers and its spin-off, Frasier. His role as Dr Frasier Crane in both shows has won him 3 Emmy awards. In fact, his role as Frasier has won him multiple Emmy awards for his performance as the same character in three different series. (as well as Cheers and Frasier, Frasier Crane, together with then wife Lilith (Bebe Neuwirth), guest starred in an episode of Wings, a sitcom from the creators of Frasier). He is the first actor to receive this honour. Kelsey has also won a Golden Globe Award, an American Comedy Award and a People's Choice Award.

Kelsey's films include Down Periscope and Animal Farm, in which he voiced Napoleon. He has also lent his voice to The Simpsons, playing "Sideshow" Bob, who keeps trying to kill Bart Simpson; Fox's Anastasia; Disney's Runaway Brain starring Mickey Mouse; and the role of the Prospector in Toy Story 2. Kelsey has appeared in many TV movies as well, including London Suite and The Innocent.

Kelsey's recent work includes New Jersey Turnpike, in which he plays a basketball coach; and Writer's Block in which he plays a detective story writer who changes to writing children's stories. He has also hosted the NBC tribute hour to Jack Benny and the 1998 Grammy Awards. He published his autobiography, So Far....., in 1995. Recently, Kelsey was honoured by a star on the Walk of Fame in Hollywood!!!

During his Cheers years, Kelsey was a cocaine addict and spent 30 days in jail in 1990. Following a spell at the Betty Ford clinic in 1996, Kelsey has been clean ever since and has been made an example of how you can beat drugs to many other celebrities.

In his spare time, Kelsey likes singing, playing the piano, tennis, golf and billiards. He also owns a 3t foot boat, which he likes sailing on.
