chibi Gohan!

Gohan is the first son of Goku and Chichi. At the start of the series, if you looked in the dictionary under Momma's boy, you would've seen a picture of Gohan. He was a complete and total wimp who depended on his parents for everything and cried too much. The reason he was a wimp was mainly because of his mother Chi-Chi, who wanted him to be a scholar and made him study all the time, and not letting him train at all. Nobody (not even gohan) knew it, but on account of him being half saiyan he actually had tons of tons of power hidden inside of him, even more than Goku or Piccolo (his power level was over 700, according to Radtiz's scanner). He just didn't know it, so he never used it. The first time he showed his power was when he was kidnapped by his uncle Raditz and saw his dad getting the crap beaten out of him. Then he had a HUGE outburst of power because he was so angry and surprised everybody by beating the stuffing out of Raditz.
After Goku died, Piccolo took Gohan with him in order to train him to use his power so he could help them fight the saiyans. In case you were wondering, Gohan didn't have any say in the matter, because he was unconscious at the time. I won't go into a huge summary of the training session (that belongs in a different section), but it was pretty tough for Gohan.Overall, the training was good for both of them. Gohan learned how to use his power, became more independent, got a LOT stronger, and gained a new role model, namely Piccolo. In other words, he wasn't a wimp anymore.
Like all saiyans, Gohan used to have a tail and transform into a huge monkey (aka oozaru form) under the full moon. This proved to be slightly inconvenient (that is a really big understatement) for the training, so Piccolo a) blew up the moon, and b) pulled out his tail. Gohan eventually grew it back, only to have it cut off for good by Vegeta.  Gohan is good friends with Krillin, and looks up to Piccolo like a second father, almost. One thing about Gohan is that he only really uses his full power when he gets angry, and the only time he gets really angry is when one of his friends gets hurt. Believe me, you do NOT want to be Gohan's opponent when he gets mad. It's not pretty. Overall, he still maintains the sweet-little-boy mentality, but can be one of the most powerful fighters if he's pushed far enough. In fact, Gohan is the first saiyan to go super saiyan 2, and he even gains another form called Mystic, which is above super saiyan levels. Later on, Gohan moves to the big city, decides to dress up in a silly costume and fight crime as the great Saiya-Man (Gohan, have you no shame?! What were you
thinking?!), trains Trunks and his little brother Goten (at least, I think so...I hope he didn't use the Piccolo method of training ^_~), gets hitched to a girl named Videl, gets dorky looking glasses and a bad haircut, and has a daughter named Pan who is one of the main characters in Dragonball GT. Despite all this, he never ends up loving to fight as much as his dad does.

PICCOLO

Okay, the story of Piccolo's origin goes something like this: The original Piccolo, who was a bad guy, wanted to become pure. Because of this, he separated his good side and his evil side. The good side was known as Kami, and the bad side was Piccolo Daimou. Just when Goku killed Piccolo Daimou, he spat out an egg which became the Piccolo we all know and love today. The main difference between Piccolo and Piccolo Daimou was that Piccolo was born with a conscience. Unfortunately, he wanted to kill Goku because Goku killed Daimou. Confusing, aint it?
Because of this, Piccolo and Goku weren't on very good terms at the beginning of the anime, and even when they teamed up against Raditz, piccolo was still planning to kill him. After Goku died for the first time, Piccolo took Gohan with him to train him. As I said in Gohan's bio, the training session was good for the both of them. Apperantly, Gohan actually had a good influence on him, because Piccolo was actually getting nicer on the inside, even though he didn't quite understand it. Eventually Piccolo saves Gohan's life by jumping in the way of nappa's blast. When he did this, all traces of his evil disappeared.Unfortuanately, he died when he did this, but he got wished back to life by the namekian dragonballs. Now he has a soft spot where Gohan is concerned, and really cares about him a lot. He just doesn't like to show it.. He does have a tough-guy reputation to maintain, after all!
Anyway, since Piccolo is still Kami's not-so evil side and is therefore part of him, whenever Kami gets hurt, Piccolo gets weaker and vice versa. In other words, if Kami dies, Piccolo dies. If Piccolo dies, Kami dies. This can be a drawback sometimes.
Piccolo seems all tough and mean on the outside, but he can actuallly be pretty darn nice sometimes. For instance, he generally begins to show more concern for Goku and co, like when he got REALLY mad at Garlic Jr. for beating up Krillin and when he jumped in front of Goku when Freeza fired a laser at him (don't worry, he didn't die this time even though he came damn close to it...). He also begins to actually be sociable to Kami!
Out of all the Z fighters and good guys in DBZ, Piccolo is the most antisocial. When Goku and the guys are out partying at master roshi's, Piccolo is off meditating on a mountain somewhere. Piccolo doesn't seem to like partying and social stuff, and seems to prefer training himself. He does this by making multiple copies of him and fighting against himself. Also, Piccolo's turban and cape have a double purpose: they both have weights in them, so when Piccolo trains in them he gets more of a workout. Piccolo has a big array of nifty attacks and abilites at his disposal, like the ability to regenerate limbs and stretch his arms really far like Mr. Fantastic.
