This is the letter that the boys from Choke wrote to
X-Press and was printed in Issue 692 on the 18th of May 2000

Dear X-Press

This letter concerns anyone who has purchased a CD Smokin Tailpipe Action from
local music act Choke. This is not a joke or publicity stunt, this is the real
deal. As of May 8, 2000, it is a criminal offence this CD, as it has been refused
classification by the Censorship Office of WA, and has been banned nation wide
until certain changes have been made to it.
If caught in possession of this CD you could possibly face a $15,000 fine
or 18 months imprisonment. Although the chances are slim, we need to let people
know to cover our own butts. You have been warned. In the meantime, a censorship
friendly, flaccid penis version will be exchanged for the offending product at our
gigs.
However Choke will not take this matter lying down. The fact that eight
people on a committee can decide what is offensive/non-offensive for 20 million
Australians is wrong, and we certainly feel we have been harshly done by. If you
don't like it, don't read or listen to it. We are after support not just from our
punters, but from the music industry in general as every artist has the right to
freedom of speech and other bands could come under the same scrutiny as we have.
It only took one complaint nationwide in 14 months for this to happen to us.
Please send any letters of support to gmdyson@optusnet.com.au
or sign the petitons at Dada's, 78 Records or gigs.
Thanks
			Choke
