A stunning mixture of crushing heaviness, an incredible grasp of melody and stark lyrical vision. Dreadnaught is a Melbourne five piece whose brilliant and twisted musical mindscapes are haunting and confronting nightmares of darkness and fear. The first album combined thought-provoking lyrics with exquistely crafted songs which struck a perfect balance between spurts of furious anger and moments of delicate introspection. After the release of the album, the band struck difficulties with its distribution and also use of its name, and the spelling was changed to Dreadnaught from the former "Dreadnought". Blah Blah Blah eventually took over the distro of the album after an extented battle between the band and Deported, and it was re-issued late in 1997. The follow-up EP showed a slight change in style, but is typically dark. moody and brooding with a sense of underlying dread. A 1999 support with Cathedral and a national tour with Nevermore was followed up by a third Metal for the Brain appearance and a signing to Dark Carnival Records, with a new album released in mid-2000 that displayed a somewhat more rock feel this is nonetheless excellent. Late in 2000 Squiz left the band and was replaced by Ando, although the bass parts on the 'One Piece Missing' EP were played by Michael Meagher. That EP is something of a departure for the band, featuring acoustic songs and covers of tracks by Thin Lizzy and Pink Floyd. A joint tour with Frankenbok in June 2001 took them through most of the country and was followed late in the year by shows with Devin Townsend and Nickelback.
