| Update 02/26/02 Approaching 70 pages in the archives and still counting! This website is back on track with the daily updates! However, I don't have much time for today's update, so this will be brief and abrupt. I just got out of school, but as usual I still have some assignments to do, especially that long report that I will be writing about after I do this update. I have several research papers to finish before March 11 or else the teachers will have to keep my grades. Come back tomorrow for the update! TSUKINA
SHORT STORY By Nur Iskandar Nurrudin Untitled She has always been surrounded by people she loved. She came from a family of eleven siblings and she was the second last. As for her friends, they were never short of supply. Always surrounding herself with friends or relatives especially when venturing outside her house, as is proper for a lady to do, she attracted her mates' attention and they soon were married. The day came when they could move out of their rented house and into their own home. It was one of those cheap housing scheme nevertheless it was a home to call their own. The location was not what they were used to however it was the only house that they could afford. She was uncomfortable and felt a little foreboding. There was nothing much in the area as it was the first and only phase that was completed at the time. None of her relatives was within miles of the place and the public transport was a bother. Her husband understood and counseled her on it. He asked her to be a little patient for the place will soon feel at home in no time. She wanted to believe him. The week passed so slow and she grew restless. Her house was far enough that she was the first few to board the bus and the last few to returned from the factory. Unfortunately for her, her husband had to work night shift that month and she was left all alone. None of the neighbours had moved in although she saw them on and off, checking in on their houses but never stopped long enough for a chat. The silence grew and so was her restlessness. By the second week, she even began to dread her journey home from work. She felt like clinging to her friends and never wanted to leave them. Everyday she would stop just in front of her house and stared at it. The house stared back and the door screamed a silent scream. She would have preferred for the house did screamed for at least the silent would be broken. She opened the door and entered. That night she sat in the darkness. Light seemed to magnify the emptiness. She sat there in the dark trying and straining to listen to any sound that pitied her ears. Hugging herself she swore that she would never be alone again. Alas, she found herself in the little corner again the next nightfall. The month drew the end and she had lost most of her smile and talkativeness. None of her friends could cheer her up and they began to just tolerate her as she still kept to their company most of the time. A shadow seemed to have fallen over her and none could lift it. So, they let her be. Just as she realized that the nightmare was coming to an end and the clouds of her mind began to part, she found a note left by her husband. Apparently, he had to cover one of his co-workers shift that had just fallen ill. Which meant that he had to do another week of night shift. O, how she screamed! What horror! Another week! Her knees gave out. Suddenly the night seemed unbearable and menacing. Another week! Sweat trickled and her body began to quake but try as she may, she could not cry. Oh, how she wished it so. At least the tears would lessen the burden of her heart but none came to her rescue. The night came with its cold paralyzing fingers. Her heart shattered and she lay there until the day returned. Feeling wretched and lonely, she decided to skip work that day and walked the neighbourhood. It was then that she noticed the cat. Picking it up she took it home. By the time she got there her husband was already home. Feeling better, she hasten. Looking at her watch, she was rather surprised that it was late evening already. She knew that he would be up and was getting ready for work. She straighten herself up before pushing the door open. As she was about to head for the kitchen to prepare his meal, she saw him already in the living room, the expression of shock was on his face. She was rather amused but soon began to understand why. As if a veil had just been lifted up she saw that her house was full of cats. There must be at least thirty of them, she deduced. All manner of feline that, she realized that she must have picked up during the course of the day while her husband was sleeping. The house was already filthy and marks of scratch was all over the place. He was saying something but she could not hear. The veil was once again covered her. Although she was pretty sure that he was saying something about the cats and most probably he would want her to get rid of it too. She was not sure but it would be the sanest guess. Unfortunately for him, she has no intention of being alone again. No, she decided that she will not be alone again that night! He stayed home too that night. It was ten pass nine when he woke up with an aching head. For the second time that day, he was shocked. His hand and legs was bound and the pain was so severe that he had to lay down again. Looking around his dimly lit house, he noticed that may pair of eyes. Memory began to flood in and he called on his wife. She came only after a few minutes and began to chatter rather merrily. He tried to talk to her but she was in a world of her own. With nothing else to do he began to scream for help which resulted in another blow and him blacking out again. It was three in the morning, or at least that was what she told him. He knew that he had lost his wife. Blood rushed to his face as he deduced that someone must had put an evil spell on his wife making her lose her mind. She was rather pretty and somebody must have been jealous of him. That must have been it for his mind cannot find any other reason. He swore that he would get the man behind it and he would pay dearly! But he also knew that he had to get out of the house first. Working quietly for an hour, he managed to free his hands and legs. He tried to get to the door but his legs were too numb to move quickly enough. He fell again. He woke up to the pain and saw his wife was holding a knife and weeping at his feet. After much horror and bleeding he found that she had severed his tendon. Unfortunately she did not stop the bleeding. He pleaded to his wife with tears in his eyes but again it fell on deft ears. For the first time he felt alone and the house was very silent. Even the cats seemed to have shut up as if waiting for something. Crying, he waited. She was happy again. Never again will she be alone and by herself. Her feline friends would accompany her wherever she goes and her husband was waiting for her at home. He does not speak as much he used to but he spent more time with her now and that is all that she asked of him. She was getting sick. Her energy had ebbed and she doubt that she would be able to go out tomorrow. She might have to fast a few days, she reckoned. She returned with what little groceries she could carry and headed straight for home. She did not have the energy to invite new friends to her house today. She was sweating and her breath laboured when she reached home. Dropping her groceries at the door she inched her way to the bedroom where her husband was waiting for her. She smiled meekly and greeted him with all the love she was able to muster. Kissing him on the forehead she snuggled in with him. She appologised for being a little late but she was not feeling well that day. She promised to feel better when she wakes up later. She just needed a little rest. Brushing aside the maggot, she rested her head on his chest and fell asleep. She smiled as she was drifting off, for she was not alone anymore. Alas it was a rest that she would never awakened again.
