Finalist judges were from the "outside": Dana Gioia, Raylene Hinz-Penner, and John Sheriff. Works were coded and judged anonymously. All works received a minimum of three independent readings. Judges’ criteria was varied, and included the following: intellectual depth in a compressed form; aesthetic treatment of line, sound, and image; the merging of theme, image, and idea; sustained development; imaginative stretching of language or accuracy of language; and authentic, unpretentious voicing.
