- Nashville Schools - A Proud History, A Bright Future!
-
Nashville's reputation as the "Athens of the South" comes as much from its proud history of public
education as from the full-sized replica of the Parthenon in our city and the wealth of higher education
institutions in the area. Beginning in 1855, Nashville became the first Southern city to establish a
public school system. The first school was Hume School, located where Hume-Fogg Magnet School
stands today.
