Platform and Position Statement

The four tenets of my campaign are Equality, Education, Environment and Economy.

“All you need is LOVE to support equality and justice for all.” Author Unknown

“I believe all Americans who believe in freedom, tolerance and human rights have a responsibility to oppose bigotry and prejudice based on sexual orientation.” Coretta Scott King

Equality

This is one area that there can be no negotiating, either every member of our society is equal or none of us are equal.

I advocate for:

Self Determination for every member of our society
Civil Unions
Eradication of the statutes of limitations for child abuse
The inclusion of “sexual orientation” and “gender identity” in all of Hawai’i’s non-discrimination laws
The separation of State and Church
Repealing the 1998 Constitution amendment banning same-sex marriage
Including “gender identity” to the Hate Crimes Act
The woman’s right to make her own decision when it comes to abortion
Ensuring that End of Life Care includes the “Death with Dignity” option
And ensuring that our seniors citizens are well cared for.

“Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed.” Martin Luther King, Jr.

Education

“A child miseducated is a child lost.” John F. Kennedy

Our students do not have the educational tools they need to achieve their full potential. Our teachers do not have the support that they need and deserve. Our public schools are badly in need of repair. Will just throwing money at these problems solve them?

No, money can only help if there is competent system in place to administer the money. The Department of Education (DOE) as well as the Board of Education (BOE) needs to be audited. The audit will tell us, the taxpayers, know how our money is being used. It will also tell us how we can correct the flaws in the school system. It is this current system that has allowed our public schools to disintegrate.

I advocate for:

A full audit of the Department of Education and Board of Education
Ensuring that our tax dollars are reaching the classroom for textbooks, desks and computers.
De-centralizing our education system, so it is more responsive to our communities needs
Repairing our public schools
Ensuring that our teachers receive the pay they deserve
Securing that each and every one of our students is safe and free from harassment.
A student that is safe and free from harassment will be able to achieve their full potential.

Environment

“I look forward to an America which will not be afraid of grace and beauty, which will protect the beauty of our natural environment…” - John F. Kennedy

I am doing my part to help the environment by doing an e-campaign. By not printing walking cards, signs and letterhead I am ensuring that when my campaign is over that there is nothing to end-up in our over flowing landfill.

One of the few things that the Legislature has done to help protect our environment was the passing of the Bottle Bill. It is a shame that it is going to take the Bottle Bill to get our companies to recycle.

If we allow our environment to go we will lose our homes and Hawai’i’s main source of revenue tourism.

I advocate for:

Incentives to encourage the use and research of renewable energy sources.
Research into new methods on we deal with all of our waste products, like the H-Power Plant at Campbell Industrial Park.
Landfills being look at as the last resort
Expanding recycling efforts in all areas
Preservation of Hawai’i’s natural wildlife

Economy

A strong economy is a diverse economy. Hawai’i’s economy is far from diverse. For the past twenty years we have heard that our government is looking at diversifying our economy. As we have all seen there has been little headway in this area. Just diversify our tourism industry is not true diversification.

If Hawai’i had a truly diversified economy we would not see such a down turn in our economy.

I advocate for:

Expanding Hawai’i’s exports
Tax-incentives, but only if they are being used in ways that benefits everyone not just big business.
Encouraging of aqua-culture
Ensuring that government is not impeding local businesses
