TWELFTH GENERATION

2304. William PHELPS * (315) (316)(317) (318)(319) was born in Aug 1599 in Tewkesbury, Gloucester, Eng. He was christened on 19 Aug 1599 in Tewkesbury Abbey Church. He died on 14 Jul 1672 in Windsor, Hartford Co., CT. One source of Phelps data indicates William was the founder of Phelps in America. When eligible he relocated to Somerset, Dorchester, England, and married Elizabeth [?]. They had 6 children, all born in England and except for Richard, all married in New Englland. They were: Richard, b.1619; William, b.1620, m.1st Isabel Wilson, 2nd. Sarah Pinney; Sarah, b.1623, m.William Wade; Samuel, b.1625, m.Sarah Griswold; Nathaniel, b.1627, m.Elizabeth Copley, a widow; and Joseph, b.1629, m.1st. Hannah Newton, 2nd. Mary Salmon.

In 1630, William, his wife and children accompanied the Rev. Warham to America and settled in Dorchester, Massachusetts, having been original members of his church in England. Williams younger brothers, George and Richard, also accompanied the party to America. Application for Freeman was submitted in October 1630 and in November William was selected for jury duty in the trial of Walter Palmer for the murder of Auston Brotchur, the first trial held in New England. Early in 1636, after his first wife had died, he and his children moved to Windsor, CT, where his brother George had settled in 1635. Shortly after resettling he married Mary Dover.

NOTE: There is much controversy over the accuracy of data presented in the source "Phelps Family of America". Information disputing the origin of William Phelps can be found in the "American Genealogist", Vol. 58 (Oct 1982). Also, "Family Memoirs", written by a decendant of Williams son Nathaniel, indicates Williams children were mothered by his wife Anna who died 30 August 1689. This source states that the mother of ALL Williams children, including Timothy and Mary, was named Anna. I.G.R. Somerset records show all issue of William was by wife Anna. In the "Search for Passengers of the Mary & John", it presents data that William had three wives, (1) Anna, mother of Richard, William, Sarah and Samuel, (2) Ann Dover, mother of Cornelius, Joseph and Mary, (3) Mary Dover, mother of Timothy and Mary. It also speculates that Ann and Mary Diver were sisters. The "History of Ancient Windsor", more or less agrees with "The Phelps Family of America" wherein Williams first wife was named Elizabeth and second Mary Dover. He was married to Mary DOVER * about 1637 in Windsor, Hartford Co., CT.

2305. Mary DOVER * was born about 1600 in England. She died on 27 Nov 1675 in Windsor, Hartford Co., CT. Children were:

The family settled in Windsor where they built a house in 1671. Shortly after they resettled in Simsbury, CT, where he died in March 1701 at age 55.
