Basic aspects of winter - This activity is a great way for young students to begin to grasp the difference in weather and seasons. To help them better understand winter, this lesson includes two great books for the first grade reading level. ( The Mitten, by Jan Brett and The Snowy Day, by Ezra Jack Keats).

Rock Candy Crystals:
(This idea comes from the GradeOne Mail List)
You need:

  • water
  • sugar
  • food coloring  (optional)
  • pan
  • wooden spoon to stir
  • string
  • jar
  • paper clip
  • source of heat

Heat one cup of water in a sauce pan and add two cups of sugar and three drops of blue food coloring.  Allow the mixture to cool for 15 minutes then pour the mixture into a jar.  Tie a string to a pencil or Popsicle stick.  Place the pencil across the top of the jar so that the string hang inside the jar.  Tie a paper clip to the bottom of the string.  Wait. It will produce crystals.

Math

Paper Chain Snowman (by Brenda in Wingham)
We have been working on counting by 2's, 5's, 10's lately.  Make a giant bulletin board snowman by having each child make a chain of 10 links in length using white paper.  Have the children attach their section of 10 to make one long chain.  As each child joins on, count the links by 10's so that by the time all students have added their part you will have approximately 240 links.  Use the chain and start in the middle of the bulletin board to build a snowman by tacking the chain to the board and then coiling it around in larger and larger circles.  Next make another chain using 5 link sections and use it to make the snowman's head.  Add features such as eyes, nose, mouth, buttons, hat, scarf, etc.  This can be the center of a winter bulletin board and you can add others things around it such as winter sports pictures, individual snowman, paper snowflakes and  so on.  The kids really like doing this activity.
